He was playing a man who was born and raised in Coney Island.

Haha yeah that’s exactly what it sounded like. . . Not like a British guy imitating a NY accent.

They are not playing against type.

Jason Bateman certainly is. Wish they had someone with a little more dirtbag charm and less clean cut guy cosplaying in that role. Jude Law’s role/casting I’m fine with.

This is interesting, I don’t think of Jason Bateman as clean cut. He’ll always be the charming punkass from It’s Your Move to me.

I did not say he did the accent successfully. No, he was only maybe like 20-30% on it.

He is an actor, he is not defined by any one role. He was not nice in Juno.

I found ep 1 stressful, and I disliked both brothers.

He said on his podcast that he essentially always plays himself, with slight variations. I like him but he’s not like a Cate Blanchett level acting talent.

Seriously. And Jason Bateman would not have that gross beard.

It's giving The Dude vibes and it was really distracting!

Jude Law is amazing in everything. I really underestimated his talent but am now a believer, lol.

Watched all of Black Rabbit and thought Jude Law was great (even though his character was very much like the amazing British character he played in The Nest).

Jason Bateman was miscast. A stronger actor (e.g., Ben Mendelsohn or Christoph Walz) coud have made it more interesting, perhaps?

I absolutely agree with pp that switching the roles would have made this show much more electric.

It really picks up. I was kind of "meh" after the first episode but my husband encouraged me to keep watching and I'm glad I did. I'm 4 episodes in and am really liking it. Not a great show but definitely entertaining. I read in the NYT that the writers were inspired by The Spotted Pig (a former "hot spot" restaurant in NYC that closed in 2020).

Nope. Bateman has always had sharp edges. Have you see him in “Bad Words” - the spelling bee movie? He’s fantastic. Snarky and dark. I loved seeing glimpses of that edgy side in Ozark, too. Good stuff.

This show is a cross between Ozark and Vanderpump Rules. In both the best and worst ways.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, it meanders a little and the heavies - Junior and Babbit scenes are both stressful and dull. But Jude Law and Jason Bateman and the ensemble cast are watchable, its an atmospheric NYC narrative. Sometimes it is way too dark to see anything on screen and a lot of episodes have been directed by Laura Linney.

Yes I found Ozark so actually dark I often could not see it. Not sure what this technique is but it’s beyond me. I am not auteur enough to appreciate it.

I loved it. My husband thought it was too slow so stopped. If you can get through the first couple of episodes, it's worth it.
