What is the purpose of the meeting? Mine are to inform me of status and issues. It's important that all of my employees hear the issues because they bleed into their projects too. I call on each person, so no one can stay quiet.
I am a shy person and dislike meetings where I'm supposed to speak up if I have something to raise. I don't want to speak up, and when I do I know that other employees are annoyed because anyone who speaks up makes the meeting go later. If someone talks too much, I have taken them aside after the meeting and told them that we don't need as much detail or they're getting off topic. |

I have a woman like that. OMG it makes me so uncomfortable I end up blabbing and meetings go on to long. She disrupts meeting by not talking.
Meaning people stop and ask her opinion and try to get an answer. It is a very very drawn out process. Like a suspect trying to get to confess. It is not just small talk she wont do that at all .. It is super weird. People like that should not work in an office. |

You're not in there, how would you know that? Either way, they should suck it up IMO. Part of being a good communicator is knowing how to navigate meetings like these. |

I once got this criticism at an annual review. My work product (which is the most important part of my job) was better than everyone else's but this was the criticism. The truth was that the meetings were almost always pointless, but most importantly, I was surrounded by people who hogged the conversation and made it difficult for quieter people to speak.
If you're going to organize a meeting, have an agenda, and if there is someone who has the most knowledge on a topic, don't let the meeting just be a disorganized mess and instead call on specific people to talk. The meetings will be more productive, and you won't have OP's problem. |
