| Are Elon football games highly attended? Or any sports? Parents they D1? |
|
We just visited Elon and the tour guide was really knowledgeable and it was a strong, beautiful school. I was impressed with the presentation and the tour guide, and I’ve been on about 10+ college visits with different kids at different times in the high school career.
I do feel like they get a fantastic education, get good opportunities to study abroad, and would have great relationships with their professors and a small close knit community. Also, their communications major is excellent. The Cons for us: Elon as a town felt very small. We tried to go to a restaurant on Sunday, and two of them were closed. There aren’t that many and it might get old by the end of 4 years. It would be very expensive for us (65k coa) and we probably wouldn’t even qualify for that $8000 of basic merit aid, but we’ll see. The first thing that comes up when you Google “Elon” these days is the other guy…not a good thing. |
You’re not wrong that it’s small, that is the con. The upside is the school knows it therefore is all in on campus programming. I do like when cities aren’t distractions as I think it can take away from community, but I do wish it had more walkable for sure. Mine is at a beach trip this weekend for a club, so they do explore out of the bubble a bit. |
| Is Dickinson woke? |
| We’ve visited both and they are on my senior’s list. Elon as a safety and Dickinson as a target. Both have really pretty campuses! I think Dickinson is a bit more serious in terms of academics. Carlisle has a little more going on than Elon too, as far as the surrounding town (though both are small). |
| Sewanee, Denison, Gettysburg, Lawrence/St Lawrence |
The first three and maybe St. Lawrence seem like peers, along with Dickinson. Lawrence in WI is a different vibe. Much artsier and probably woker. Kind of an academic middle ground between Grinnell and Beloit. |
We also did a visit recently and were very impressed and concur with these positives that include the excellent tour, also having some of the same concerns. It's not as isolated as some here make it out to be, btw. I got good advice here to stay at the Inn at Elon and eat at The Root Trackside. My current worry is strength in the sorts of major/programs my kid is interested in. They seem to shine in business/communications/teaching/nursing. My kid is more interested more traditional liberal arts/humanities. TBD whether my kid actually applies, but it's not a knock against the school -- it would be a fit issue based on academic goals. Still investigating. I have tried to get my kid interested in Dickinson, but so far no dice. Not quite sure why. |
Dickenson Elon is not an education |
| My brother used to say that Dickinson had all the hot girls so called it Dick-in-mouth. YMMV. |
We know someone who got a ton of merit from Dickinson. Chose to attend and is really happy there. |
Either your brother is ugly or that was decades ago |
Well, they care about marginalized groups, are inclusive, don't ostracize anyone for their ethnicity or sexuality, so I'm going with yes. Send your spawn to Liberty. |
Hmm US News ranked it #1 for undergrad teaching last four years. They seem to think it’s an education, but I’m sure you know best. |
Whenever I see this question, what I hear is: “Can my son feel free to casually use the N-word or F-slur without fear of pushback or consequences?” |
