I enjoyed those also. But they are a little adult. So not YA.

As I recall, there's some sex and some crudity.

I guess the Sarah Maas books are on par. But those don't fit YA well from my perspective (sexual torture).

If he is into sci-fi, Google Octavia Butler. Some popular books/series of hers are Kindred and The Xenogenesis Trilogy. Kindred may be the most age appropriate. Her writing is eerily predictive of current times.

+1 DS (14) is not a big reader but he powered through all 3 books in the Scythe series this summer.
