Engaging books for quirky teen boy

Any particular suggestions for YA or other books that are engaging reads for 14-16 year old boys? Fantasy without a ton of romance? Looking for books for kid who is quirky and nerdy.

When I was in high school, I liked the 5 book Belgariad series by David Eddings.

It's a pretty standard good vs. evil hero's journey fantasy story.

The main guy and the princess do end up together. But it's not a romance driven plot. More like Star Wars or LOTR.

Also I've heard good things about "The Wheel of Time" series but have not read them.

Yes! I read the series for the first time in early high school. Loved them.

Philip Pullman's Gold Compass series. He has another series - the book of Dust - that my son just started. Sounds good so far.

My quirky teen boys LOVED the How To and What If books by Randall Munroe.

Now in their early 20's, they STILL read them before going to bed when visiting home.
