Concern about neighbors entering my yard while searching for lost dog?

Great update!

I would get a lock on my gate going forward.

My neighbors would definitely be welcome in my yard to look for a lost pet or recover an errant soccer ball. Looking in our windows is weird, iso at the most I might say something about that, but reallly I would let this go. Honestly if someone were that concerned about privacy I’d be a little worried they have someone tied up in their basement.

It’s definitely the climbing up to peer into my windows that has me a little creeped out. I don’t mind them in my yard, but I don’t know why they need to keep looking in when they know I’m not home.

The multiple times part is ok to me, a lost dog will likely wander around after all. The peering into windows part is super weird. I would not call police if people were familiar to me. I’d ask them to stop.

No it's not. Dogs are not stationary objects. They move. They run. Come on!

I would call the cops if I had already told them to not enter. It’s that simple. If you decide to note my request to stay off of my property then you will be lucky if the only thing that happens is a police visit.

That’s great!

Now, the tiny weird thing was that they were looking inside your house. Did the dog have an AirTag? Do you know those details? They were probably panicked.

Thank god I don’t live with “neighbors” like you.

They are already in your backyard and on your deck. They are likely curious so snuck a peek. they’re looking because they KNOW you’re not home. It would be creepy if they thought you were home and peered into your windows.

I glance in cars when im parked beside one I’m curious about. When i go in a daily walk, I glance over at houses yards if their back gate is open. I am not creepy…. Just curious.

What would you say to the police. And what do you expect the police to do. Tell them to not to go into your yard multiple times or look in your windows next time they lose their pet?

That is why you have a camera. It should make you more secure.

If they do get hurt on your property they can sue you, so I would not let them on.

They are trespassing. You do need a no trespassing sign.

A group of about six people were helping search — again, all familiar faces from the area, not strangers or anyone suspicious in that sense.

I let them know we weren’t home and didn’t have the dog. But later, my camera showed the group going into my backyard, and they’ve returned multiple times. They look around, climb up onto my deck, and even [b]peer into my windows.

I completely understand how stressful it is to lose a pet, but I’m really uncomfortable with people entering my property like this, especially repeatedly and without permission. I was not able to respond live each time, and I’m worried this could keep happening if the dog isn’t found soon.

I don’t want to escalate things unnecessarily, but I also don’t want people entering my yard again. Would it be unreasonable to contact the police, or is there a better way to address this with the neighbors? I have to jump on a call soon and won’t be home until later. I’m live watching and can see them still out and about.

The "lost dog" was an excuse thieves will use to gain access and trust to scope a place out. There are many other excuses like that.

Sure they run, but they do not unlock doors and go into peoples homes. Peering in the OPs windows is creepy.

Call the police and file charges.

The hard part about neighbors when you own your home is they’re likely going to be your neighbors for a long time. Better to excuse their behavior under duress and be a kind neighbor to preserve your relationship in the future (when you need help).
