The only gold in this age is from the waning light of America's best years

Y’all got us here.

Exactly.

How? Libs gave you Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, a social safety net, 40 hour work week, the greatest universities in the world that every brilliant person across the world used to want to attend, housing, the best economies, etc.

So, how did we destroy everything?

Those were classical liberals. Not the same movement as the leftist progressives that have taken over today.

JFK was a classical liberal. Today he would be run out of the Democrat Party. Allen Dershowitz is a classical liberal. Most progressives here would cheer news of his murder.

I agree, very little of what would have been in JFK's platform made it into Obama's agenda when they had a filibuster proof majority. Though, even the classical liberals didn't really have their heart in it, they quickly drove a schism in the party rather than let labor run its course. How did they think a fixed minimum wage was going to age well?

In the big storyline of the Democrat party around two hundred years old. JFK was like 20 years at most, not even representative of how the party actually works. The Jacksonian mudsill exploitation seems to be more par for the course with the Democrat party.

Yes. The US is the greatest expression of human freedom in history. And we still are.

If you are too jaded and brainwashed to see and appreciate that, PP, I feel sorry for you.

DP... Jaded, yes, but not brainwashed. We see Trump taking freedoms from any groups he doesn't agree with. You for some reason are brainwashed to not see it.

THESE things mentioned by a poster above are significant freedoms that Republicans now loathe and detest

DP. It may have been, but that has come to an end in 2025. You have people declaring on their license plates that they will fight tyranny who literally wouldn’t know tyranny if it hit them in the face, as we all now see.

Timothy Snyder, an expert on authoritarianism, said of someone who would support these authoritarian moves: “your support makes you irrelevant.”

This. The US was uniquely great, and the Trump admin has willfully destroyed it.

In the 1960s

The only good thing about the 60’s was the music. It was a period of complete turmoil of internal and external fighting. A true clusterf0ck.

You must be a liberal!! Everyone knows the 80s had the best music!!

What a f’ing joke. Trump and you people have created the largest police state. All of the data the US government has is now being centralized to better control the population and the US military and DHS are the police.

Go say something against Israel or Trump. See how fast you end up is a penal camp. You have destroyed this country because you hate your neighbors.

Please cite these penal camps filled with American citizens who spoke out against Trump or Israel.

Back up your assertion. Do it. Do it now.

We will descend into bigotry and nationalism and everything that was special about this country will be lost.

The Golden Sunset Years of the American Empire.

Pretty well sums it up.

Add in the concerted effort to drive women out of the public sphere in society and I'm planning to help my two daughters have other options by leaving the US for college.

I've had an internal alarm bell ringing for several years, but it's just too loud to ignore now.

im a liberal, and sad and a 2nd generation immigrant now residing in europe. this person was right- for a long time the USA was the greatest most free nation and we could've stayed that way but greed won out. freedom from fear, freedom from hunger, freedom to achieve- all of these were freedoms that were beloved even if they were not applied equally but disenfranchised Americans could still dream and work to join the mass of free Americans and the "freedom from hunger" offends the rich so much that they are willing to barter the greatest political experiment dreamed up by mankind.

It's been happening for some time. I'm not into Trump but I don't think people realize that he did not single handed destroy American civilization. No 1 person has that much power in our government no matter what. Rather, it's been weakened for some time and it's ripe for someone like Trump to come in and change the culture.

When all we did was graduate lawyers v engineers that's when we got into trouble. 1990s is prob when it started to be about Presidents having law degrees and that's when the beginning of the end started.

When lawyers run the country v people who build and make things, it's a bad omen for all.

This sent me down an interesting rabbit hole of previous occupations of POTUSes:

https://potus.com/presidential-facts/occupations/

27 presidents were lawyers. 14 former military. I don’t think there was ever a golden age of maker/builder presidents. But it would be an interesting departure from tradition.

I don’t think we Americans realize how exploitative we as a nation have been around the world.

The chicken chickens are coming to roost.
