Does double your 2 year old’s height work?

Child 1 was 3 feet at 2, so by estimates should be 6foot.

Child 2 was 2 feet 8 inches so by estimates should be 5’4 (boy). At the time on the curve he was about 10 percent for a while. Now he’s 8 and trending about 80 percentile. I was wondering if you would still expect him to be around 5’4?

I would definitely consult a pediatric endocrinologist or other specialist for Child 2, to see what can be done.

You would? Even if he’s currently at the 80’percentile for height?
He keeps trending up as he gets older. He is 8. Dad is 6’2 and I am 5’4.

Yes absolutely! If the prediction turns out to be right then he will only get to 5’4”

I would not wait on this. He needs to see a specialist asap.

This is insane. Don’t listen, OP. Your kid is in the 80th percentile right now and is obv growing just fine. His height at 2 doesn’t matter, at all. There is zero reason for a referral.

When my mom did it, my sister was predicted to be 5’10 and I was supposed to be 5’8. I am 5’1 and my sister is 4’11, so I would not say that is within a reasonable margin of error.

It should be 18 months for girls, not 2 years.

Our doctor has not mentioned this. He’s taller than 8/10 boys his age currently at 8. Should we really be concerned?

Not sure if PP is being serious or not, but OP have you noticed that you continuing to repeat this stat is not changing PP’s answer? How many more times can you write this lol

I don’t think so, only because DD was the tallest kid in daycare -5th grade. She looked like a giant. She didn’t grow much past elementary school and is 5’3.

I have no idea what my kids’ heights were at age 2 but:

Both of my sons (mid-older teens) seem to be ending up around the same height percentile that they were around age 2. One is average and one is tall.

It would be totally off for my DD though. She was always on the shorter side from infancy all the way through childhood (30th percentile-ish) yet ended up 5’8”.

I’d have to say it is probably a good clue as to eventual height, but not entirely predictive.

How tall are the parents? That is usually more predictive, IMO. Is there a very short parent or close relative?

My guess (given he is 80th percentile now, and sibling sounds like they are also tracking tall) is that the measurement at age 2 was off or was written down incorrectly (or remember incorrectly). Seems the most likely explanation.

No reason to be concerned or see any specialist (no clue why people are saying you should) unless your pediatrician is recommending you do so. There isn’t anything out of the ordinary about your 8 year old.

I don’t understand how this can be true for both genders. My kids, both boys, and their female cousins were all very close together in height at 2. It’s clear they will be significantly taller than the girls after puberty.

Not for us. My teen daughter was predicted to be 5'6". She's 5'4.5" and deeply salty about it.

I hadn’t heard of this but looking back on their heights this does not seem to be panning out for any of my kids. The parents height thing didn’t, either. My kids are all varying heights and so are my siblings and me. I had a 10 lb boy that was huge, off the charts at 2 and is just average height now at 8. When my middle girl was 2 she was in the 2nd percentile , wearing 12-18 months clothing until she was nearly 3, she’s almost 5 feet now and still growing.

That’s an old wives tale. Not accurate at all.

If your child is white, try the Khamis-Roche formula. It is the most accurate way to predict without a bone scan.

Does she really think there’s a big difference in 1.5 inches?

Was wrong for our boy (would have been 5'10", is now 6') and our girl (would have been 5'4", is now 5'6").

Agreed. In preschool the boys are all similar in heights to the girls. Obviously it doesn’t stay that way.

I looked up my kids bc I was curious - and no - based on their height at 25m (closest doctor appt) they would both be 5’10 and they are 5’5 and 5’4 (15 yo may get another inch)

Maybe this calculation is more accurate for boys? Bc 5’10 is quite tall for a girl and my kids were never more than 75th percentile for height. They are also shorter than projected but that’s typical for girls in my family (taller when younger percentiles wise - I was projected to be 6 foot based on my toddler heights and I’m 5’8.

Ask around with grandparents. Some families are late growers
