My kid had a friend who hit an uneven sidewalk on one of those, flipped and landed on his head. He was a brilliiant kid before the accident, but had to drop out of college afterwards. I would never get one of those for my kid, and I am fairly laissez-faire about that kind of stuff. |
Do you really think it’s a good idea? Or kid simply says he wants one? |
| These are SO dangerous. Broken bones, severe sprains and road rash, TBI if you get hit and thrown by a car, not as easy to control compared to a bike, goes faster than a bike. Don’t do it. Please. |
| Electric scooters are dangers. Child at one of my kids' school died on one, and know of adults who have been in ICU after a fall. |
| Some schools have banned them. |
| OP, do you have a fat kid or something? Why did they need a scooter? |
| My son is at UMD. They’ve been banned for on campus students. Check with the school before purchasing. |
Some campuses, like UCLA for example, are VERY spread out and it might take an hour to walk to a class from a dorm. If an 8am class, no kid is going to want to get up and start walking before the dining hall is even open. |
UCLA is actually the smallest YC campus by area. Still, 20 minutes max, walking from the hill to anywhere else on campus. Unless you’re lollygagging … |
isn’t there a campus shuttle? |
It's a good idea if you want to give your kid's classmates a quick way to bond over disliking "the kid with the electric scooter who rides it on the sidewalk". For better or worse, their dislike of him will dissipate once it's stolen. |
How on earth did they manage before electric scooters were invented? |
| Buy a lock and store outside. Dd has done this for 3 years. No biggie no issues. |
|
By campuses have the rental ones and they’re maintained by the company. There’s a truck that rolls around to recharge them.
You can’t charge your scooter at a bike rack and you can’t bring it into the dorm. |
Good idea. My kid had a Hiboy. I would st about 70% of the kids have them. Just get a good lock. Kid used at both undergrad and grad (off campus housing) |
