It was the best pre-9/11.
I had the most amazing blueberry risotto at Galileo once. Tried recreating it many times, could not. |
| Obelisk!!!! Etrusco!!! Georgia Brown's. |
…People. |
| I didn't come to DC until 2004, but I remember liking Georgia Brown's, Pho 75, Lauriol Plaza, and Jaleo. There were plenty of chains--I remember corner bakery, chipotle, and krispy kreme opening--but lots of local places too. I still regret not going to Palena! And I remember walking by DC Coast on the way to work and thinking it was SO FANCY. |

Obelisk is still around. And for Guapo’s you have to order the carne asada to get good steak fajitas and just ask them to grill you a jalapeno. I miss the cheap pasta places like Pasta Mia in Adams Morgan and that AYCE place that Roberto Donna but those were probably both gone by 2002. |

| I don’t especially agree with OP’s premise, but I’ve never enjoyed a meal as much as I did at Komi. |
My income is ten times better so that I can actually enjoy those things instead of working 80 hours a week just to afford our rat trap in the inner suburbs and a Metro bus pass. |
| Two words: Cafe Japone. |
| I LOVED La Piazza. I was so sad when they sold. They had the absolute best penne vodka. |
Sure but if you were making the same income you are now, even de-adjusted for inflation, in 2002 you'd be able to afford a whole lot more. |
Mostly people. But everything sucks now. Everything is cheap and cheaply made. The weather sucks. Food is mostly fake highly processed frankenfood. All of it the epitome of trash. |
