what time are your elementary school kids going to bed tonight?

7pm bedtime for a 2nd grader in the summer??? It's still bright and sunny out! Is your kid doing camp at a dairy farm?

OP is asking about bedtime for the first day of school.

But yes, my young kids had before the sun sets bedtimes. They needed 11 hours of sleep and were waking up at 630. I think the shift to later was around age 8 or 9 (3rd/4th grade).

I used to have a neighbor that put her school aged kids to bed around 6:30, I knew because she would frequently complain about me mowing my lawn after work because "her kids were trying to sleep"

My kids all have different sleep needs, but I generally aim for 8:30pm lights out for a 6:45am wake up. Kids are 6, 8, and 10. The 10yo realistically isn’t in bed before 9 most school nights due to sports.

My 3rd grader went to bed at 7pm (but was allowed to read in bed) because he had a 6:45 wake up time.

7:30 for the first grader. Consistency is key for us.

Same. My youngest needs 11 hours.

My 6-year old goes to sleep at 9.30, wakes at 7.

We do upstairs at 8 (not counting sports) for everyone (including my 13 year old). Then we shower, read, etc. My younger kids turn out lights around 9, my oldest stays up later. No phones in the rooms, so they are just reading, or doing other quiet stuff.

This hasn't changed much in years, and my oldest is the one who needs the most sleep, so she doesn't push too late. My middle is in middle school now, so has to wake at 6, so she is tired early.

My 4th grader goes to bed between 8:30-9. He wakes up 7-7:30. We have to leave by 8:20ish to get to school.

Bedtime is only half the equation.

Pre-sleep rituals are also important.

Yes and no. People can get too reliant on a very specific and consistent routine, and the kids turns into a disaster when everything isn't perfectly in place. Gotta instill some resilience in kids too.

+1. Don’t become a slave to the routine. You will end up with kids and parents who have trouble with 2 hour time differences and who waste half their vacation jet lagged because they can’t deal with one night of 6 hours of sleep.

My kids go to bed at about 9-9:30 on school nights. Sometimes it could be later if sports run late. They’ve never been kids that could go to bed at 7 though past toddlerhood, they’ll wake up at 12 and can’t fall back to sleep until 4 am.

Yep this is my kid too. Almost 8 now. We get up at 715. She will sleep later on weekends sometimes.

Shower at 8. Then my husband reads until about 9/9:15 and then lights out. Daughter is almost 10, entering 4th.

Slave to routine is different from going to bed at a reasonable time leading up to the first day of school.
