I don’t have a kid at Deal or JR but Google maps gave me the info in about 10 seconds.

Good for you. Gold star for you. Not everyone is as savvy and DC and DCPS regularly waste TONS of money on things like multiple postcard campaigns reminding everyone how important regular school attendance is. But somehow no one thought to produce information helping families figure out how to help their kids navigate a completely new bus system rolled out when school was out. You can say "google it" but the oversight is obvious.

You’re really telling me you need a postcard “hey your kid’s bus number is changing!” to figure this out?

Just a heads up that right now the C81 bus line (which replaced several dedicated buses going to Deal and JR) is under a detour due to construction. The stop at 14th and Kennedy is out of service due to that construction so you have to catch the C81 bus at Kennedy and Georgia Ave before it turns north up Georgia to Military before continuing west to Deal and JR.

Do you realize that pretty much no other middle or high school ever had dedicated school routes?

According to Google Maps, they can catch the D60 going North, then transfer to the C81 at 16th and Missouri. If they leave by 7:45, they will get to school with time to spare. Kids growing up in this city really should be taught how to use the transit system. Google Maps lays it plain.

Thanks. HS is hard enough without having to wait for a bus transfer on a dark November morning in a cold rain. I'll drive them.

These kids are doomed if they can’t take an umbrella to a bus stop at almost 8am (it’s not still dark then, btw). We have to stop shielding them from the slightest inconvenience or discomfort. The Transit app is your friend. Good luck.

+1 especially if you're not going to your IB school. Just like the parent in Anacostia figured it out, I'm sure you will too.

Please stop driving your kids. There is so much congestion up there, and it’s bad for the environment, not to mention dangerous.

Just drop them off along the C81 route. Everyone takes that bus.

It’s not that hard and it’s not that dark. Lots of kids do it, it’s not like it’s 6 am.

That's pretty easy for those of us whose kids can walk to Jackson-Reed to say, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable judging someone who lives farther away for driving. (I would judge my neighbor for driving there, however.)

It’s unfortunate but the new bus system was created without having the school bus routes in mind. Big loss for the kids

I think the new route is the same as the old one and even references the old route. They even add buses on school days to accommodate the kids.

do a mix of driving and the new bus system. c60 runs north-south on 16th street and connects just north of the neighborhood to the c81. its probably typically about 35 min total. depending on your address, it might also work to walk south to use the c61.
