Are schools allowed to use gender in admissions?

yes they are allowed to gender balance under supreme court rulings.

They do try to balance genders, OP. And usually, they can't make it 50-50 because there are too many qualified girls and not enough qualified boys.

The New York Times had an excellent article about it some years ago that I encourage everyone to read. It detailed the bro atmosphere that develops when colleges try to attract boys on campus, despite lower qualifications. Specifically, it can lead to women students feeling less safe when dating campus men.

I think the article says the bro atmosphere occurs when they try to attract males primarily through sports recruiting alone (jock bros, lax bros) rather than other ways to get talented males (debate recruiting, arts). they also say the bro atmosphere prevails when the gender ratio is too highly skewed towards women so straight men get to be "big fish" in small dating pond and straight women have to compete for their attention. My DD is worried about that so we're trying to focus on 50-50 schools or 55-45 schools.

Gender discrimination gets a less stringent level of judicial review and has consistently been upheld in the context of school admissions.

The waitlist may favor males and full pay if schools find their enrolled class is lacking in those areas.

But I did an experiment a few years ago when my son was applying to look up CDS reporting. The vast majority of schools are consistent across the breakdown of applicants, admitted students, and enrolled students. In other words, more girls apply, more girls are accepted, and more girls enroll, often at 60% or higher for each category. There were very few schools that I found where there appeared to be a big advantage to being male.

Why then have so many schools gotten rid of their women in stem programs? Virginia tech just ended their program.

Idk why don't you ask them about it during an info session or tour? Or email them privately?

Really? Many? Maybe MIT and Cal Tech, but in nobody's world do MANY schools have lower admissions rates for men. The process is overwhelmingly biased against girls.

That's sad, but understandable. My DD wouldn't want to go to a school that is over 60% female.

Sexism is ok when it benefits white men.

Sounds like affirmative action. Trump & co. should get on this ASAP.

hahahahahahahahaha - thanks for that

You’d have to compare the acceptance rates to see if there’s an advantage or not.
