Influencers child drowned while husband watched NBA

To add …. I hope this gets a lot of coverage so any family that doesn’t yet have a safety gate immediately gets one. It’s fine to say “oh we always watch our kid” but in reality …. Not everyone watches a kid all the time. Just blaming this dad minimizes the larger issue, which is that they made an affirmative choice not to have the proper safety mechanisms in place.

OP is a broken record.

Yes this a perfect example for the thread about recognizing repeat posters. How can anyone not see that the OP is the same for both threads?

(Although the OP admitted to reposting so this isn't some gotcha or anything.)

You do not recognize the people like you think you do, I’m so sick of these posts where I post once and immediately get slammed as being another poster. Stop this nonsense!

Sad situation. They had just had a second child as well not long ago. The mom came across my Instagram last year viral for peeing in her Stanley cup then was called out for keeping it and drinking from it in a later video saying she kept using it because the husband told her not to throw it away.

So you only posted once, or you posted before as you stated earlier? You should consult the other half of your split personality before replying.

Back in the 80s that was common but for the last 20 years, I don’t know anyone that didn’t put a safety fence around the pool. Also 3 is too young to be playing outside by themselves. 5 would be fine if there is a safety fence maybe. We also get rattlesnakes, scriprios and tarantulas in the back yards in Arizona so you have to think of that as well.

Exactly. I lived in a neighborhood where 80% of the homes had pools and it would have been scandalous if one of the families elected not to have a safety fence. The family would have been ostracized. Both parents are idiots for allowing this. He HAS to be charged. What a selfish idiot.

I am a long time user of DCUM who occasionally recognizes trolls with bees in their bonnets about certain topics (ex: the troll who posts regularly about MIL-son-DIL triangles).

I don't care if this poster repeated another post on drowning. This is not a troll. It's about a tragedy that actually happened, and raising awareness of drownings in children. If you see another post on this event, report it and Jeff will delete it. He usually only keeps one thread at a time about any given real life event. This is why the real trolls are harder to catch, because of course they make up slightly different stories each time. Jeff can identify them if they always use the same IP address, otherwise it's difficult.

I mean, you can teach a baby to swim, right? If you have a pool in the backyard at the very least teach them to float face-up if you're not going to be placing a fence around your pool.

A relative's little boy drowned. They were at a pool party at someone else's house. Relative was anal about safety. It still happened.

Read the room - no one minds. See yourself out if you're going to be so spitting mad on a lovely Sunday morning.

People were CONSTANTLY in her comments telling her to fence that pool and that she was playing with fire (water?) in terms of child safety, but she was either dismissive of those pleas or deleted comments. So, it's not like she didn't know how problematic this was. The drowning ultimately happened on the husband's watch but I also think she gets blame for being so blase about the need to secure the pool.

Given the facts that have just come out, it really bothers me that the dad won’t be charged. He allowed a 3 year old to play, unattended, near a pool with no safety features to prevent accidental drowning, and then lied to investigators. Sure, he could have accidentally estimated the amount of time his son was out of his sight incorrectly, but he claimed to have been watching the boy, yet his account of what the boy was doing was entirely inaccurate. He was not watching his son at all. Only a completely derelict parent would live with a backyard pool with no features to prevent drowning and let their 3 year old play in the backyard without any supervision.

Would anyone here take their 3 year old to the neighborhood pool, which has lifeguards, and pay no attention whatsoever to the child for 9 minutes?

What state is this? IMO all private pools should be required to have locking covers and/or secondary gates.

“Parenting influencers” and “family influencers” are some of the worst parents ever, and teh whole influencer culture is harmful to society.

All of you who watch it, even “hate-watch it” are contributing to some very big problems. Neglect, accidents, abuse, kids being used, your are feeding this beast. Your appetite is what drives these harmful machines.

My kid is 8 and a strong swimmer and I don't let her play in or near a pool without adult supervision. I was at the pool with her last weekend and she and her friends kept wanting to switch the pool they were playing in so the whole time the other mom and I are texting to make sure one of us could still watch. And the pool has lifeguards! But kids make mistakes, the lifeguards are young, at the end of the day I'm really invested in keeping my kid safe.

But nobody thinks it will happen to them, which is why this family didn’t take any precautions even though they were encouraged to do so many times, and why other families with young children have declined to add safety gates to their pools. The outcome here is that the prosecutors felt there was little chance of conviction, so they’re not even going to file charges. This story doesn’t give anyone any extra incentive to install gates.
