Recommend a nice bag for a masters degree grad gift

I love MZ Wallace — but I think that an MZ Wallace bag probably needs to be chosen by the person who will be using it.
Cuyana, Everlane, or — given the price point and the return policy: Quince, might be better choices.

Unless you really know this woman’s tastes, consider giving her cash or a Visa gift card, with a note suggesting that you had a bag in mind — but want her to chose whatever is best for her. She can do what you can’t: Buy something that she needs even more, or, scour discount and resale sites for something awesome at a reduced price.

OP, your kind gift is a wonderful way for you to celebrate a grad student’s accomplishments!

It’s this for work? Kate Spade outlet often has great sales. Maybe something like this?

This. Bags are incredibly personal. Gone are the thankful for any old thing days. Take them shopping so they get what they want vs what you want to get them.

Here’s a Quince option to consider.

I agree that people have very specific needs and tastes when it comes to bags. Given your price range, it probably doesn’t make sense to take her shopping, as has been suggested. This is an option that’s flexible and within your price range, with a year long return policy. One possible option could be to get something like this — while making it quite clear that you’d be absolutely fine if she returned it to get something better suited to her needs.

I’m a lawyer and I use the Portland leather tote bag for work. I like it.

I got my daughter a coach satchel cross body from the coach outlet to use for work and it was around $200 and leather and decently made.

Look into Polene but the price you’ve selected is a bit low.

I think people would prefer to pick out their own bag, no?
Nice gift, though.

I'd rather have $200 in cash. Picking out a $200 purse for someone is straight up weird. I could see if you were gifting something like a Hermès Kelly, or (not my style but popular) LV Neverfull GM, or even a Chanel 11.12, but a $200 bag is weird. Just do cash.

My work tote is from Patricia Nash and is in the OP's price range. I have several different pieces and they have all held up really well. That said, I bought mine 5 + years ago so I can't comment on the current product quality.

Some of the products have colors or patterns that might be too personal to buy for someone else but there are solid neutrals also.
