Is there any purpose in completing FAFSA at $400k+?

No. Not giving my info to anyone for no reason.

We did not do FAFSA or CSS. HHI $450K + enough in 529s to cover 80%.

If you will have multiple kids in college you may get $$$. Run the NPC to check.

Is it true that you will not get merit based money if you don't fill Fafsa. School counselor said you have to fill it.

School specific. Check school's merit scholarship website. Some do, many don't.

I did not fill it in and my kid was offered merit at most schools he applied to. I have heard people say there are schools that require it but I think that is rare.

Your school counselor's answer was inaccurate. Most schools do not require FAFSA for merit. As a PP mentioned, there are a few schools that do, but that's rare. Check your schools' scholarship websites.

+1.
Many haven't.
While others have out in hours/ week over 10 weeks of summer attending workshops, listening to everybody-thinks-they-still-know-how-admissions-work-30yearslater podcsts, reading blogs, meeting with financial planners and counselors. Even universities and AOs don't know what's to come with the changes this upcoming year.
