I wasn’t drunk, so what was this?

While your timeframe may have been a little longer - say it was 4-5 hours. “Adult woman” is a very large pool so again a 25 year old will respond differently than a 40 year old and then also on a hot day outside all day vs a different time frame. Plus is it possible you’d rank five but you thought you drank 4?

I had my first at noon and was done drinking before 8pm, but I can’t say for sure when. Maybe 6-6:30? They are sold in a four pack so I know I only had four.

Not eating enough food and drinking too much!
Spending extended periods in the water can lead to dehydration.

OP said they drank between 12-8. That’s 8 hours.

If I was drunk, how was I suddenly completely fine afterwards, with no hangover? I’ve been drunk many many times, unfortunately, and it doesn’t get easier the older you get. I know what it’s like, and you don’t puke and feel better, and you sure don’t wake up feeling refreshed.

Seriously, how old are you? You don't know that vomiting means no hangover? You should extremely sheltered.

+1 how often do you drink these days? We went on a long hike yesterday and after it we went to a brewery and even just one beer went straight to my head. Because I’m not 25 anymore, hadn’t eaten or drank enough throughout the hike I’m sure even though we DID eat and drink throughout but you’re still just expending a lot. You had 4 in one afternoon (this was before dinner so the time frame you gave is longer than the 4 I think, 8 is after the incident when you actually left it sounds like. sunhat or not you were in the sun all day drinking 4 drinks and you probably don’t do that often anymore.

Dinner wasn’t until almost 9:30pm. I said between noon—8 because 8 was when we last got off the boat and I had already finished my last drink, though I can’t recall when.

What had you eaten between noon and 8 then? 9:30 is an extremely late dinner for people out on a boat and in the sun all day. Maybe you didn’t eat most of the day and that was part of it?

This is what I’m surmising but I’m not sure. I had pretzels, watermelon, and two pinwheel sandwiches from Costco, if you’re familiar. I was starving and excited to eat dinner but felt completely ill once we got off the boat and were sitting down to eat. It just hit me like a ton of bricks. Before that I was functioning fine; packing up gear and moving it to our car, helping clear out the boat. I was in no way even tipsy.

I’m 41. I’ve never not had a hangover even when I’ve vomited.

Tbh, I thought it was accute food poisoning....more like it just didn't sit well after a day in the sun, dehydration, swaying on a boat, and your body now in super over drive trying to filter the alcohol.

Um, this isn’t true at all. Hangovers are often caused from dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Vomiting only exacerbates this. Where did you hear vomiting cures hangovers? This is crazy lol

I had considered this, but no one else got sick.

Eh, maybe your hands weren't quite clean or the rim of the can wasn't clean.

I have a completely different theory. This is how abdominal migraines present for my daughter. She gets extremely tired, sometimes throws up and then feels completely better. Sometimes long exposure to the sun will trigger them for her. Hardly ever a headache associated with them, which can be confusing for people because of the word migraine, but look it up and see if you’ve ever experienced anything else like that.

True!

Thanks everyone! I guess I was drunk-ish, certainly dehydrated, exhausted, and a little peckish. Not a good mix!

Throughout the day noon-8pm I had four Long Drink beverages. Spread over that amount of time, I don’t think that’s a lot of alcohol, and at no point did I feel drunk at all, but right before we sat down for dinner, I started feeling like I suddenly needed to sleep or close my eyes, and I excused myself to sit in our car and do just that. Then, I felt the urge to vomit, which I did. And then I felt completely fine, albeit tired and dehydrated. We drove home (DH driving) and I felt fine. When we got home, I showered, and then sat and watched an episode of a show while I waited for my hair to dry a bit. I don’t think there is any way I was drunk. So what was it?

...

What could it be?

Here you go, here is your diagnosis: you were tired and dehydrated. I'm not sure why this is a giant mystery.

So just before you felt ill, you were physically exerting yourself on a hot day. Then you suddenly got sick. Welcome to dehydration and heat exhaustion. You're listing out exactly why you got sick and not seeing it somehow.

40 oz of water is nothing on a hot day. Plus swimming.
I drink a liter an hour hiking in Hawaii and don't pee.
