If you have kids, or like culture/tradition, this place is cool.

Nice ferry ride to get there.

OP, we stayed in Zurich and did a lot of day trips from there- Stein am Rhein/Schaffhausen, Lucerne, Montreux, Interlaken and surrounding area, Neuchatel, etc. The train station in Zurich is pretty amazing and easy to get to from most hotels in the city.

If I could do anything over again, I would have spent the night in the Interlaken area to do more outdoorsy things (hiking, etc.). The scenery is so spectacular.

Oh no - no Interlaken!!!!

I thought it was great! We were there before the summer though. It was wonderful. Hardly anyone there.

Take the train to Lauterbrunnen, then Wengen. From Wengen, you can do day trips (easy, short) via train or cable car to all kinds of places: Männlichen, Grütschalp to Mürren, Schilthorn, Jungfrau, etc....

Beware that some of the maps exclude the other maps (it's so confusing!) but if you know where you want to go you're good.

Have the best time!

This is the standard advice for touristy crap. I’d go to Lucerne or the suburbs of Lucerne instead.

I didn't find it touristy at all, but we did some more offbeat hikes. To each their own!

No part of Switzerland has not been entirely cased by Rick Steves and his ilk. You will not find a “hidden gem” in Switzerland.

Bull. We were just there and were basically the only Americans at every place we went to. We had zero crowds. We don’t do Interlaken or the touristy crap mentioned in Rick Steve’s guide.

Bull yourself. I don’t believe this for a minute. Switzerland is tiny and is well trodden territory.

We were in tiny villages you all haven’t heard of that aren’t touristy. About 30 min from Lucerne. So peaceful. Not a single loud obnoxious American tourist.

I don’t care what you believe. Have fun in Interlaken, Wengen, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and all the other tourist traps. Have fun spending $200 to go up the Jungfrau Joch. lol.

Just a quietly obnoxious American tourist. Just showed this to my Swiss DH and we had a chuckle.

Bernese Oberland is spectacular. And if I could stay in one place forever it would be Montreux.

Would you mind sharing? I'll be there next month for work and could use some peace and quiet. Thank you!

The fascinating ignorance of the American anti-tourist snob is how they ignore all the other obnoxious tourists of all other nationalities. Most tourists in Switzerland are not Americans.

The Bernese Oberland is spectacular. Worth spending a few days there. I'm going back in August for another hut to hut hiking trip. Will say if in late October, many places may be closed but I suspect the main sights will be open and you might even get snow. The cable car to Pia Gloria from Murren is an excellent alternative to the Jungfraujoch train. It's stunning up at the peaks. Also love seeing Trummelbach falls as it takes you back to your childhood and the Goonies.

Write to the Swiss Tourism Board for suggestions. I know someone who did that after winning plane fair and the Swiss Tourism Board hooked them up with all sorts of discounts to great restaurants, attractions, hotel rooms, etc.

There entire existence is about making suggestions and helping to make sure that people enjoy visiting Switzerland.
