The kid was 9 years old.

I’m not sure what your point is here? Kids often go to amusement parks with camp groups and other summer programs, and might be attending unaccompanied by their parents. (Apologies if you meant something different. I can’t access the article.)

It’s not uncommon for one parent to take their kid and a friend or two. Maybe they weren’t aware of swimming expertise or lack thereof. My kids have gone into that wave pool, and they are strong swim team members, and they were shocked at the 6 foot heavy waves. One almost got pulled under.

We had a very scary incident during a swimming lesson even with multiple lifeguards in the pool. There was confusion over which lifeguard had which group, and while all the children were kicking on the edge creating large splashes, our child let go of the side for some reason and even though it was the shallow end… was getting pushed under the water because of the splashing water from the kids was rising the water above her head. We had to shout several times to get anyone to pay attention and grab her. From that moment, we never relied on lifeguards to watch our kids. It was a sobering lesson. We thought, during a swimming lesson of all times, they have responsibility as they are directly supervising. Never ever let your young swimmer in a wave Pool or at a float night get out of your line of sight.

This is no one’s fault

The park has signs their liability is covered

No parent sends their kid thinking this will happen

If the kid was with a camp and not wearing a life vest then that negligence no nine year old should be in those wave pools without life vests . No matter how well they swim.

Other than Disney it's probably the nicest amusement park out there.

But, yes, most amusement parks are dumps—the whole industry sucks. But Hershey is one of the best of the genre.

Even a kid who can swim get get distressed in a wave pool. Particularly if they got stuck between inner tunes or similar. I'm personally not a fan of wave pools.

Really tragic. I've never been to Hersey's wave pool, but I was stressed out the entire time I was at the Six Flags wave pool with my kids (which is admittedly a dump, I'm just trashy like that). There were many, many lifeguards and they seemed like they were being vigilant. But the whole scene was so chaotic I could easily see a weak swimmer having trouble.

They do, those foam life vests are free at most amusement parks. They are pricy but really good. It’s the kids and adults choice to use them.

According to Reddit, the child had a seizure which may have caused the drowning.

This significantly changes the story.

More than Reddit is posting this. If you can find a local news source, some of the commenters witnessed the medical emergency and are stating it was a seizure.

I came here to post that as well. Various witnesses said the child had A seizure. This is a tragedy for everybody involved, the child, the family, lifeguards and first responders.
