filing for unemployment

My experience in Maryland is that you can file right away, but they won't start paying you until the severance is exhausted. (They determine this time by looking at your prior year's salary and prorating--so if you get $20K in severance and your prior year's pay was $100K, they'll calculate your severance as 1/5 of a year.) I was glad I filed before the severance was exhausted, because that meant that once I was actually eligible to receive $, the paperwork had already been done.

How do they know your severance?

It’s on the form for you to answer. Your employer is also required to answer if you received severance.

You file for unemployment in the state you worked in. For example, a Virginia resident who is a federal employee with their duty station in DC would file a DC claim, not a Virginia claim. Unemployment is not based on where you pay taxes, but where your employer pays unemployment tax on your behalf.

I just file for first time in VA. In other states I had to sign in and contrast O was job hunting. VA is asking for name and contact number of those I have interviewed with. Are they really to call them? I would prefer to keep this private.

So, I received VA unemployment about 2 years ago and it took me almost until I went back to work to be able to file my weekly report online - the online system asked for Company Name, contact and phone number. But, while I was filing via their telephone system, I only had to provide the company name. While I did have actual names of some folks, in some cases, I was applying to LinkedIn job posting and just reported the company name, generic HR person and phone number.

Just wait if you get picked to participate in the VA jobs "re-employment" program - that's a couple of hours of time to for a on-line session and then you need to follow up regularly with a VA jobs counselor. Tons of fun. Yeah!
