How much do you spend on a summer vacation?

Family of five, HHI of about 160k. The past several years, we have done about 4 days at the beach in an Air Bnb that is not more than $2000. Last year, it was a one bedroom condo in ocean city, but ocean front and with an indoor pool. This year, it's a SFH that's about a 5 minutes walk to the beach in Norfolk, VA. Two years ago, it was Chincoteague, a house with a huge yard, but we had to drive 15 minutes to the beach. We make meals at the house and eat out (carry out) maybe once. So, all in all, we probably spend 3K +/- on summer vacation.

A family of 5 in a one bedroom condo? Frankly, I'd rather just stay home. That sounds miserable.

3 teens and we are not extravagant vacationers (don't even have valid passports TBH except for DH)....and I agree. Hard nope.

+ 1 - I mean if you are going to cook and live in a 1 BR all together - why even spend anything to vacation - that sounds worse than your life not vacationing? LOL

When we go away, no I am not cooking. I am not going to have a vacation where I'm living my daily routine life. If I have to see a beach or another environment from my daily one, I'll just watch a movie hah!

Man, when we travel it's like I'm in a movie. I am going to R&R, be able to thoroughly enjoy myself - as much as possible still being a mom to 2 teens I will seriously never understand why the idea of vacation is not practiced by all. When you have a break it's because you need to change up your routine and ideally, be able to explore a new environment completely (not drive to sit at a beach for 5 hours).

Same for me. It's one of the reasons we sometimes do less expensive vacation spots because I'd rather go to Niagara Falls and be able to stay at a nice hotel, do every activity, eat whatever I want, buy meaningful souvenirs than to slum it in a one bedroom condo while eating PBJ. I can do that at home. I think both are valid and a good use of money, it just comes down to preference. I get more relaxation out of an all-out long weekend than a week spent cooking.

600ish per person for a 10 day trip. Total trip was about 2500 for 10 days in the Greek islands. Flights included but we were already in Europe so flights were cheap.

Varies. We have a family of 5.
This year, we spent $3k on a 2 bedroom condo near the beach for a week. We drove there.
Last year, we went on a cruise to Alaska for $13k, including flights (booked partially with points) and a pre cruise stay in Seattle. We got 2 rooms on the cruise ship.
The year before that, my family tagged along on my work trip to Colorado. After the work part, we stayed with friends for a couple of days, then went to Rocky Mountain National Park for the rest of the week. I’m guessing we spent a couple thousand but I can’t recall.

Why is that a big deal? Many of us live in small homes and share a hotel room. A one bedroom would be great. We usually just do a hotel room.

We spent $3,000 on flights and $3000 on a hotel. Probably another $1,200 on food (expensive city), $900 on experiences, and $400 on souvenirs. Three people, so almost $3K per person. That tracks with other recent vacations, too. This one was Europe for about a week. For domestic trips I'd halve the flight expenses.

You also have to factor in things like $500 for pet sitting.

It varies depending on whether we fly or drive. Last year we took a six night road trip in the mid-Atlantic for about $2,300. The year before we flew across the country and visited Disneyland and San Diego for one week for about $7,000. Obviously the flights, rental car, and theme park tickets made that trip more expensive. Some years we only take a summer vacation. Other years we may also take a short trip during spring or fall break.

We are a family of three with two parents and one young teen, so we are able to stay in one hotel room to keep costs down.

This post bothers me so much. Don't you understand the PP is vacationing and doing it within their means? Maybe they like cooking or cooking saves them enough money to stay an extra day. It's judgmental and entitled to imply there's something wrong with driving and sitting at the beach while cooking your own meals. People are not less valuable because they have less money.

There's no requirement that a vacation is exploring somewhere new or eating out or staying at fancy places. You don't even have to leave town to have a break. I don't even like the beach, so this is not about defending my own choices, I just think the PP is tone deaf and that kind of attitude results in ingratitude discussed recently on another thread.

Probably about $2100 for 2 people for 6 days this year, so $175/person/day. Last year 4 people for 9 days, probably closer to $150/person/day, but renting a car is expensive.

Also spend a few overnights in hotels a 2-3 hours away when we feel like it during the summer. This year 3 times in the summer + weekends in September, October, and December already planned. We're typically in hotels at some point about 9/12 months of the year, so summer vacation is not the only money spent traveling.

Different places for bigger trip. Mix of familiar and new for weekend trips, but we hardly ever go to a beach. I think the last time was 2.5 years ago and even then very briefly.

+1. Different people have different preferences & amounts of disposable income. If you don’t like a one bedroom condo, you’d really hate our beach vacation— we sleep in a tent and cook over a fire.
