For those who use private door-to-door school transportation, how much does it cost, and what was the process to set it

Have you called the school and asked if there are other students in your neighborhood? Share the ride?

I’d like to get a sense of the general costs before I take the plunge, as well as understand what the process typically involves. Thanks in advance!

OP what school and where do you live? Have you considered carpooling?

St. John’s, and Rockville.

There got to be a bus or lots of older kids who go there. I went to a different Catholic hs in dc and there was a very good carpool network. Did your child go to k-8 parochial? You won’t need private transportation.

A lot of the NOVA Gonzaga boys use the VRE. Plus it’s free.

Where can you pick up the VRE? Is there a stop in Arlington?

No. Alexandria.

Did parents set this up? Because the school doesn’t have a bus service. Any idea of cost?

Could your student metro on the red line from Rockville to Tenleytown and then take a C81 bus east, arriving right in front of SJC? Could do the reverse going home.

If you share what school and general location you’re coming from people can better help you. I would check if your school has a FB, WhatsApp or Group me page/discussion. My kid is going to Gonzaga and our class has a GroupMe discussion where parents ask and give advice on stuff like this. It’s been super helpful. I would assume most schools have resources like this. hope you find something that works for you.

This. But, your kid is going to want to take the SJC bus with his friends. He won’t care that it’s earlier since he can socialize.

What about Uber Teen?

Have you signed up for the SJC Mother’s Club? They have an online community forum where moms ask for carpool connections, etc.

This is true. Some of my kid’s best friends at SJC are ones that he made riding the bus (albeit a public route in our case).

$600 for a private driver. We used a summer camp/after school program driver.

We couldn’t use the shuttle because my work day began at 7:30 AM and the shuttle didn’t arrive in our area until 7:45 AM.

PP here. Sorry I see now it's SJC. I would reach out to other parents with older kids that live near you to see what they do.

Just wake up your DC early. Most kids will be riding the bus together. He will not die if he has to wake up 30 minutes early.
