watches? ties? dinner out a month after they start? do they drive or use public transportation? are they teleworking at all?

Second the nice luggage / Tumi toiletry bag suggestion. These are things they likely would not splurge on on their own.
Perhaps a nice watch if your budget allows would be another option.
