Controversial opinion? Frozen bags of corn taste better than corn on the cob

Anonymous
Fresh sweet corn on the cob beats anything.

But just your normal corn on the cob you pick up at the grocery? Meh.

Not controversial.

In 99.9% of situations, frozen corn tastes superior to store-bought fresh corn in the cob. (I’m excluding frozen corn on the cob because I’ve never knowingly had it.)

I grew up in corn country. Our kitchen garden included rows of corn that would go from stalk to kitchen in fewer than 30 seconds. That corn represents the %0.1 when fresh corn is superior.

Fresh corn, like so many things, is just not as reliably delicious as it used to be. I grew up eating Silver Queen corn from roadside stands during the summer and it was sublime. Now when I buy fresh corn, it’s hit or miss.

Lots of canned veggies are better. They are picked at peak ripeness and canned right away.

I shuck it at the store so I know what I'm buying, and then we grill it. Never goes wrong.

Please don't shuck corn at the store unless you actually purchase it. It's so wasteful to partially shuck it and put it back.

I was gonna say the same. Most people know better. But I guess some selfish nitwits don't because I've seen signs telling people not to do this. Especially when it's dirt cheap like 6 or 8 for $2 or whatever, do you really have no shame?

I don’t care, as long as it’s not in my guacamole.

Of course this is true. The sugar in corn starts to turn into starch when picked, so if you have an ear lying around, it will become less sweet over time.

Frozen corn is usually frozen immediately after it’s picked, so it will be more like fresh picked corn.

What brand of frozen corn do people like? I have been using the 365 brand and it hasn't been as sweet lately.

Fresh corn isn't fresh from the field. Once it is picked, the sugars in the corn start turning to starch. The longer it takes to get to your table, the less sweet it will be. Your local farmer's market is about the best you can do unless you are growing corn in your backyard.

Flash frozen corn was probably frozen almost the same day it was picked.

How do the frozen bags have such perfect kernels? How do they get the kernels off the cob so perfectly? Wonder of the world!

Sometimes even perfectly fresh corn sucks; it's often bland or it has tough skin.

+1.

So you're microwaving all the pesticides and fertilizers from the husk in your microwave, thus steaming those chemicals into your corn, and then using the same microwave to cook uncovered food in later? No thanks.
