DD is insisting on being called "Cherry"

Sounds like a porn star/stripper name.

There is a quite anccomplished American actress named Cherry Jones.

Sharon =/= hip lol

You don’t have to support her, but you won’t be able to stop her either. So you can either get on board and have a happy child or be a contrarian and have a strained and negative relationship with her. Your choice.

She doesn’t need your permission to introduce herself as a different name.

However, she's now saying that it's a "middle-aged white woman name" (keep in mind that she is white) and demanding that we call her "Cherry". She's already got her friends to call her Cherry and plans to start high school introducing herself to classmates and teachers as Cherry. I'm not a fan. In addition to the inappropriate associations that cherries can have, Sharon is her name. It's a wonderful, lovely name, and now she's saying that she wants to be called a piece of fruit? I don't get it. WWYD?

I would let my child use the name they prefer because Sharon IS an old white woman's name.

Your parents raised a dummy.

As someone who is an older white woman, I can confirm I've had many older white woman friends named Sharon.

I would let my kid call herself whatever she wants, it might help her self esteem, because being called Sharon probably won't.

She’s 14, this is typical. Don’t pick a battle on it - tell her you will try but will probably forget.

A little your fault for not designating a nickname option from early childhood bc no teenager wants to go by Sharon, which is indeed a name for a 72 year old woman. Very dated and out of place for her age. I would have suggested Shay.

That being said, dated names are ones that usually come back in style and she will probably start using it again in her 20s. Cherry feels a little silly and maybe suggests a stripper but if she doesn’t act that way it also can come off cutesy too.

What’s her middle name?

My kid had a great time introducing herself to everyone in middle school as Elizabeth, when her real name is quite different. Now she's in high school, and goes by her birth name. Some people still think she's called Elizabeth, which she thinks is hilarious, and of course she responds to both names and doesn't mind. It was just a passing phase.

Let it go, OP. Kids want control, and they did not choose their names, which is a very central part of their identity. Obviously it's going to be first on the list of things to wrest back.

I wonder why you're so uncomfortable with this.

Sharon IS a middle-aged name. It’s not trendy and hasn’t been trendy in decades.

Cherry is so cute! These days kids like to pick names for themselves. I get that for some parents there’s a bit of a grieving process with this, but ultimately it is her decision at this age about what she wants to be called.

Yeah, Sharon is not a hop mane. You should have given her a much more hop mane.

What's the age of the youngest Sharon anyone knows? I can only think of one former work colleague - she's probably 65. Sharon Stone is 67. That's all I got.
