Sharon isn't a great name for a teen. I don't know anyone under the age of 50 with this name! However, I would tell her that the name Cherry can be a bit iffy and then it is up to her. My daughter is called a different name too. I don't love it and miss the name we gave her but it is their name and they are old enough to be addressed how they prefer.

What were you thinking 15 years ago OP? As 99% of posters have agreed, Sharon is a horrible name to give in 2010.

I knew a girl born in 1965 named Sharon. When she was 20 in 1985, she legally changed her name to something else (can't remember what). But 25 YEARS before your daughter was born, people hated the dated sound of Sharon.

It is not like Emma or Sophia. Sharon is in the Bertha, Mildred, Agnes, Edith, Linda, Lisa, Barbara, Nancy bin.

Cherry is way better than Sharon, but some mean people will tease her about popped, and lots of strippers are named Cherry or Peppermint or Cinnamon, so there could be some teasing there too.

But even with that possibility, Cherry is 10x better for a teen today than Sharon.

Fast forward to her mid 20's and working. If I were told the new hire is named Cherry, well it's not the most professional sounding name so she will still have some challenges.

If she was open to suggestions, Ellen or Ellie is so much better. Is Shelly too dated too? But they're kind of better than Cherry. Definitely better than Sharon.

A few posters have said they have students named Cherry and think it's cute, so if she sticks with it, I wish her the best. Maybe it will become more common again.

But if she keeps Sharon legally, she's going to get called Sherry instead of Cherry a lot. Even if she legally drops Sharon, people will mishear Sherry for Cherry and she will forever be spelling and correcting her name into retirement age.

Now, your penance for giving such an awful name in 2010 will be to do your best to try and call her Cherry. And if she sticks with it, by 17 you will help her legally do the paperwork to change it before she goes off to college.

Lisa peaked in 1965 with over 60,000 baby girls being named Lisa. By 1985, it was down to 9,000. It tanked by 2000. It's mainly considered a 60s name - peak range was 1960-1970.

And how do I know stripper names... As a woman married to a man for over 30 years, I haven't ever been to a stripper club. But a few months ago I was reading an economics discussion of whether there are early signs of a recession. Someone mentioned a "well known" stat that Las Vegas strippers are the first to detect a pull back in spending. Intrigued that this was an economic indicator I hadn't heard of, I googled.

That led me to a discussion forum for strippers, with posts about their dismay in going from recent times of $1000/night to recently barely clearing $100-200/night. I spent around 30 minutes reading about stripper's concerns, as this is a world I had never contemplated. I found it interesting (and a little sad). One of the topics was "help me choose my stripper name". The suggestions were Brandy, Cinnamon, Angel, Peppermint, Cherry, Amber, Peaches...

And that's how I recently learned that strippers have stage names and what they were. I'm not convinced that there's clear evidence, based on LV strippers, that a recession is upon us quite yet.
