We were told to use the Dr. Browns bottles because less gas. We have tried multiple bottles though with the same results. Getting her to take 2-3oz a feed is tough! Very sleepy girl who likes to fall asleep mid feed. |
Do you not understand that a bottle hasn’t helped us? Your suggestion is pointless. |
I’d get a second opinion on the tongue tie. Sounds like there’s something stopping the baby from sucking. |
My baby, born at 39 weeks, also had to be syringe fed for what felt like forever. She did eventually move to breast (and nursed until I weaned her at 2.5 years). The breastfeeding center was really helpful, especially as we transitioned away from the syringe -- weighing before and after feeds gave me confidence that she was eating enough. It really does get better! |
Any update? |
I agree with others to make sure someone who is an expert on tongue ties takes a look if you continue to have issues. 37.5 isn’t SUPER early so if sucking continues to be an issue and she can’t use a bottle you would not be the first (definitellllly not, count me as one of them) who was told your baby doesn’t have a tongue tie by a professional (even an iblc) and it turns out there is.
Susan Howard can be a place to start - she does virtual if you aren’t in the area or could connect you with someone skilled in this area if she is booked which she may be. She also offers virtual support groups where you can get some ideas. Good luck it can be so hard you will get through this time. https://arlingtonlactation.com/ |
Has to be a tongue tie. Pediatricians do not find the posterior kind. Also they miss lip and buccal ties. Find a qualified provider. Try strong ties if you’re in Moco. |
Agree on second opinion on tongue tie.
But also, use a bottle with BIGGER nipple. She is working too hard to get the milk, getting tired, and falling asleep. Do not use Dr. Brown slow nipple. |
Sorry I meant bigger nipple opening. |
Hey OP, I’m so sorry you are having trouble!
My kiddo also wouldn’t latch at first, and struggled to gain weight- so was considered “failure to thrive”. It sounds like you’re doing everything right. You’re focused first on feeding the baby, but also working with a LC. You’re following pediatrician orders, and seeking more help. This is a tough stage, but it will eventually pass. Keep trying other ways of feeding, and just give yourself grace that you are doing your best. Maybe find ways to have additional help if you can (night nurse a few days a week so you can get a tiny bit more sleep?). Good luck! I have honestly forgotten some of the worst moments from when mine was tiny and in a similar boat (not even the LC at the hospital could get her to latch), and eventually you will too. |
Sometimes their little jaw needs to grow. Mine took about a month of growth to really be able to latch well. We probably used a nipple shield till about three months and then easy breezy
The tube feeding system is called supplemental nursing system. SNS Is babe able to transfer milk? Ours took a long time as well. |
Susan Howard is awful. Do not recommend. She sent me home with the beginnings of mastitis so she could sell sessions at her weekly meeting. Essentially shooed me away and should have sent me to er. |
Try undressing her when she falls asleep. It can rouse her. Also rubbing foot with a cool washcloth. |
I’m really sorry that was your experience. It sounds like she made a mistake here. She also can definitely have a bit of a dismissive tone sometimes, certainly unintentionally but I know what you mean. But she has helped a lot of women with complex issues get to the root of the problem. She’s not perfect but she dedicates an incredible amount of time and she has offered completely free group support sessions twice weekly for literally years which is frankly, insane, and more than I’ve seen any other professional do so I have to strongly disagree with the insinuation of her pushing her services which never happened at a session I attended. |
Should say I’m the original pp here. Lol I just reread my post and I’m like why does that sound like Susan wrote it? Legit human here who went to sessions, used Susan’s 1:1 services and doesn’t think she’s perfect but thinks she’s solves difficult issues better than most and is one of the better experts in tongue ties in our area. |
