Where is USA headed?

The 100 American flags in houses in my neighborhood - could not be more obnoxious. The problem is that so many continue to talk about how great this country has been and will be without actually observing what it is like now. We have a lot of probs and it's not a shame to admit it so we can fix it and recognize we gave something to do better and want to learn from other countries who may do something better but nope, it's always about how nobody is stronger, richer or has more freedom than the US. So what? None if it means we are happy or good at anything!

That's what people observe when they visit from other countries -- why are there so many flags everywhere and there are more flags than clocks in public places (that was before everyone carried a phone and someone noticed Americans don't wear watches).

Well, Americans have a particular fetish with the flag. Betsy Ross and the flag she sewed is part of the birth of America folklore. It wants to be a cultural symbol.
Most other countries and their peoples have a shared culture and history long before their flags. Think of the Soviet Union's flag. It wasn't there before the Bolshevik Revolution and they are all still Russians before and after Soviet flag and still Russians with this new post-Soviet flag. The Chinese were Chinese before the Communist flag and will still be long after their current government transforms again. Italy was a bunch of little duchies and city-states long before the current flag and everybody there knows it. Basically, most countries have a lot more going for its cultural identity than a flag.
But most Americans don't have a long shared history and its culture is mostly politics which is increasingly divisive. So the flag is one of the few things that people here can agree on which is kind of sad.

They’re building walnut paneled, professionally decorated bunkers in New Zealand for a less severe disaster scenario.

I’m not kidding. Unless you’re a billionaire, you are not part of the class that will survive anything. Vote accordingly.

Are you buddies with the Comet Pizza conspiracy theorists?

Those people are crazy. No.

It’s not a conspiracy theory. Just because it’s not common knowledge to the middle class doesn’t make it a conspiracy. Most super wealthy people are weird and selfish. Really weird. And paranoid.

Holocaust deniers. Already evident, and will be attempting to move the Overton window to normalize themselves.

That’s an interesting point. Thanks for sharing.

It’s getting really hot in this handbasket.

It's going downhill, I guess the American century is over. The downside is most of us can't leave, so we have to muddle through somehow.

I am envisioning something akin to the opening of "Ready Player One" - dystopian corporate hellscape with environmental degradation and total exploitation of humans where the only escape is virtual reality online.

Who knew that was a future documentary?

Comparing a country that is 250 years old and no legacy culture to other peoples with more than a thousand years of history is kind of silly, no?

That is because everyone has felt the impact of the past 25 years differently, and many are having trouble seeing collectively when no vision has been set.

This is what US enemies wanted.

NP. I remember when we stitched the US flag back together after 9-11.

I do think Americans are innovative and creative so I generally never bet against them. But the domestic headwinds are really strong. There is a large segment of the population who would rather fight and hurt their fellow citizens instead of solve the major problems we face. I guess it is easier to troll people than to fix problems. It’s disheartening but I think their time will fade soon and reason will take over.

Democrats will win next election and open the borders again. They will import millions more cheap desperate workers to take US jobs

Urban elites will be more prime land , build more gated communities

Our children will have less opportunity and more debt

Democrats will expand h1b and opt visa programs used, Democrats will repeal e-verify

Trump himself has acknowledged that there is nobody to replace the workers from the agriculture and hospitality industries that he is deporting.

I thought the ppl kicked off medicaid will replace them.

All I know is that our current government is not preparing us for the things that are coming at us, but mostly at our children: new epidemics; the AI revolution and its effects on jobs and society; and climate change. And by dismantling our government and its protections, the current administration ensures that the next normal one will have to work that much harder to get us back to some basic level of functioning. Meanwhile, we’re losing precious time to prepare for the future.

That’s America now—one step forward and two steps back.
