I am a teacher and it feels short. I can go back 8/8 which seems so early!

Teacher here. I'm enjoying the heck out of my summer break. I do tutor 2 days a week, but this is glorious. My own kids are grown, I've got next to no other responsibilities. But, I could see how a parent might be freaking out that there are so many more days to do the work of caring for kids.

Very few parents want less than 2 weeks. I love the 2 week break and many divisions do this. They CAN get rid of some of the random floating days to decrease school year.

Make some of the religious holidays TWD and get rid of other teacher workdays.

Next year, if they got rid of Veteran’s Day, had school on Columbus Day and made Diwali a TWD, and got rid of the TWD after spring break, we would be ending school June 12 vs June 17.

I agree with school on Veteran’s Day and bring back the assemblies we used to have. It was a better use of the day. I like having Columbus Day off.

Get rid of all of the religious holidays, teacher workdays and busy work PD that is useless. That would solve the issue. Most of the meetings on teacher workdays/PD days are awful.

Students and teachers can take off for their own religions without penalty. Let us start the year later and end earlier. -teacher

You’re a teacher and you’re unaware that Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day is not a day that teachers have off? It’s been a teacher workday for about a decade.

The very short summer is proof that schools are mostly a babysitting service these days. It's all about the parents now, not our burned out kids. High school students in particular are incredibly burned out by the long school year that hust keeps going and going and is geared toward providing daycare for K-8. I've long advocated that high school should run on a separate, shorter calendar of its own. So glad our youngest only has one more year of high school.

Schools should start day after Labor Day and end first week of June. No need to celebrate everyone’s holiday. Let people take their holidays with no academic policy and go back to a schedule that has worked for decades.

Yes, I agree. This is how it was when I was growing up and it was the best! I got to be outside with my friends all summer. I hate it how now everything revolves around childcare and camps. It ruins everything. I can’t even enjoy my time off with my kid now because there’s always multiple vans or buses of summer camp kids wreaking havoc on any day trip we try to do. Even our own neighborhood pool or rec center! It’s ridiculous!
