High MAP math scores

My cbild scored 240+ at the end of 2nd grade, requested to take compact math 4/5 at the beginning of 3rd grade. Rejected.

Were your child’s report card math grades low? My child scored a 230 (96th pctile) at the end of 3rd grade and is in compact math for 4th grade. I guess these things can vary by school but it seems odd to reject a 99 pctile kid.

PP was looking to take Compacted Math a year earlier than usual, taking 4/5 in 3rd grade not 4th.

Oh thanks. I didn’t know that was a thing

What is AOPS?
How would you suggest advocating for algebra in 6th if starting compacted in 4th?

Art of Problem Solving / Alcumus.

Western county schools do algebra in 6th after CM 4th/5th as a standard, based on MAP-6+ score of 260ish

Scream "equity" at your principal if your school doesn't offer it, and make a plan for 8th grade if your middle school doesn't offer Algebra 2. (Usually involves bussing to the nearby HS for 1st period).

Because it's not at thing, except a rare fighter, usually someone already accelerated before they moved to MCPS, and scoring 2 years ahead of the placement they are requesting.

What MAP score do you need in 3rd grade to qualify for compacted math on the regular schedule?

Do third-grade students take the grades 3–5 version of the MAP-M Math assessment in the fall?

What does "scoring 2 years ahead of the placement they are requesting" mean?

I'm not sure what kind of score would make it reasonable to skip a math level in 3rd grade. I've never heard of anyone doing that at my elementary school (Wootton cluster) - I always thought level skipping was something that only happened in middle school, not elementary.

There is no skipping in elementary because otherwise there is no math class available in 5th grade. It has nothing to do with a child's level in math. And usually public school teachers are way too overburdened to offer meaningful custom work for advanced kids.

In 6th grade, some middle schools allow kids to test into Algebra 1, because they have a bus available to take 8th graders to Algebra 2 at the high school for first period. They can get back to their 8th grade second period in time, because high schools start earlier. It's the only way math acceleration works at the secondary level... because of this start time difference. I've heard that rarely, some middle schools offer an actual Alg 2 class in the building, but I think MCPS is trying to phase that out.

Always think about the end of the track when wondering whether your kid can be accelerated. My kid scored in the 99th percentile in elementary, was picked for CES/compacted in 4th and 5th, wasn't lotteried into a middle school magnet but took Alg 1 in 6th, and is now taking AP Calc BC in 10th. She will do multivariable in 11th, and take a college math class in 12th ( or AP Stats).

It’s not. Which is why they were rejected

I know some ESs do allow but some do not.
