At my kid's top FCPS high school, VT is not an easy admit for engineering or business. Some other majors, such as math, admit at significantly higher rates.
My 2025 grad was waitlisted for engineering, and we know many kids who were waitlisted for business. The kids I know were all admitted into better or higher-ranked programs at other colleges. The only rejection my kid received was the waitlist from VT, and they are off to a top 10 engineering school, without engineering ECs, by the way. I would submit your kid's test scores. The math is solid for engineering, confirming math readiness. Bottom line: if your kid is truly a competitive applicant for engineering at VT, then they will have some terrific options elsewhere, and you will be able to get merit aid at private and public schools that will bring the cost in line with VT. I'm sure that the 1510/4.2 kid mentioned above is at a terrific school as well. |
Grades were strong enough to get into multiple higher ranked engineering schools than VT. Looking at the naviance for my kid's high school, there were several high ranked kids with similar stats rejected or waitlist/rejected from VT. |
1560 (790 math), 4.3+ waitlisted. SAT doesn’t matter much. |
And none of them from parents of kids who actually go there. A Hokie, and Hokie parent, will correct you every time. So use this information to help you determine the veracity of the information and soundness of the advice you are being given. If you they say VaTech, they do not know what they are talking about. |
That's perfectly acceptable. |
Thinking maybe the VaTech in writing comes from all the people responding do you mean: Vermont or Virginia Tech?
To VT Likewise, the University of Pennsylvania NEVER was called UPenn. It was just Penn. So many people confused it with Penn State the U was attached more recently for clarification. So, ease up on the VaTech posters. |
It was called UPenn back in the 80s. |
How about OOS admission to engineering? |
I'm trying to keep them from embarrassing themselves or even ruining chances of admission. Using "VaTech" in an essay will get it dismissed immediately. Take the time to write Virginia Tech if you don't think enough of the University that you fear someone may confuse it with Vermont. |
+1 That's because it's the usual troll. |
Except no one will know what the PP is referring to. |
Agree 4.2 W is around average at many high schools in Virginia. Average is rarely good enough for VT engineering unless it is a top feeder private. Our stem magnet sends many in the 4.3.4.5 range to VT. Scoir shows they do not get in to ivies or top publics for engineering. The top 10% cutoff is usually 4.8+ and they go to ivy+ or michigan or UCB as a backup. Parents on dcum need to look around at scoir or listen to deanJ and others: gpa is quite inflated at Virginia schools, with many having 3/4 of the graduates above a 4.0W. It comes down to course difficulty and relative rank compared to the peers in the high school. At some high schools VT accepts from the top half, for others it us from the top 15%. Uva also takes a higher % from the stronger high schools. Ask the school for VT acceptance data. |
This clown is my favorite VT troll. Reading their two posts together (which isn't easy, BTW), VT is supposedly for average or below-average students from their kid's magnet, yet somehow a reach for students from regular public schools. The real truth about VT is simple: lots of average kids get admitted with less than stellar grades, but it's heavily dependent on their intended major and which high school they attended. Whether by design or not, VT just isn't going to take every qualified kid from NOVA. |
What are some of the other programs that your child or other kids you know got into, that were comparable in price to Tech? We are building our list now and have been focusing on in-state, would love to know about other options. Purdue? |
The bar is considerably lower for OOS admission to engineering than for in-state. Their yield is crap from OOS, so they need to accept a ton of kids to yield what they want there. |
