The teachers who were teaching these Math courses were from Yang Academy. |
If you look on the thread for placement into algebra 1 you will see the clear stigma on kids who aren’t strong in math. The entire mindset there is that those students are not intelligent and won’t be successful in college. That is for students just placed into Alg 1 not even students needing extra support for Alg 1 materials. Obviously parents who have children who struggle with math understand that their kids have to work hard to get it and need extra support and see their intelligence in other areas. But it is obvious there is a stigma for students who struggle with math. |
Fairfax Collegiate has intro to HS math courses in person in VA locations as well as online. My kids took intro to Algebra 2 online and it was helpful. The teacher actually started by having them take a brief assessment to see which areas they might need extra focus. The online classes were not very full (pretty sure there were under 10 students) and it was worth https://fairfaxcollegiate.com/summer/math |
Most private schools have some kind of summer camp that includes at lesat some academic subjects. This kind of refresher/prep math course is fairly standard. And most of these schools are open to everyone over the summer. We looked a few years ago in the District, and Gonzaga, Sidwell, GDS, and Saint Albans all had ones that could have worked for us. |
We are an incoming SR family and have not heard about this? Would be great! |
Just do IXL. |
OP here- the class is at the high school and taught by the math dept head. Only for students enrolled at the school who have demonstrated need. |
Visi is the same. It’s offered but only to those they determine need it (I assume based on HSPT and transcripts?). Not open enrollment. |
Thankfully your kids won’t be going to DCUM high. The warped minds here are a very small sliver of any parent body and definitely the ones who at worst, talk crap to their husbands. Your child will be fine. |
They have a bunch of enrichment courses you just have to pay. |
St Albans offers an algebra review camp and a full algebra camp |
It looks awesome and to be honest it follows the summer homework pack for algebra 1. Also, it’s a great way to make friends I’m sure! https://www.stoneridgesummercampus.org/programs-by-grade/grades-9-12 |
I wonder if the school will allow kids who need this type of support before entering 9th grade to accelerate with summer geometry & enter algebra 2 in 10th? Wondering if this would be a good option so there isn’t a year long gap between alg 1 & 2 and that algebraic thinking is still fresh. |
My DD came into high school weak in math, which had been a struggle her entire academic career. She did the two-week summer refresher ahead of algebra 1. She didn’t love it at the time, but it was fine and she made friends heading into the new school via the class. She didn’t need more algebra tutoring.
I don’t think there was a stigma about taking it, at least at her parochial school, because only the kids who were in the class over the summer knew. Anyway, it was totally worth it. She came in way more confident and managed to even eke out some A’s in math for the first time. |
