This is not at all unusual but yet is a good opportunity. I would encourage your DC to interview wherever possible with schools they like. Yes before applying.
There is a significant difference btw between a post application interview with an alumnus (unless you blow that it usually does not count for much) vs a pre application interview with an admissions officer - those are very impactful.

Why do you think these pre-application interviews are very impactful, other than demonstrated interest? Guess I don't quite understand this.

It won't make the difference for an unqualified candidate, but for someone on the edge, the AO having a personal connection/impression of the student as they read the application can be meaningful.

Worried about the same thing.

My autistic kid did several interviews. It's zoom, so harder to assess eye contact. She comes across a little awkward and has slightly flat effect, but she's majoring in her area of special interest and her passion comes through very clearly. She got into her top choices, so it didn't hurt and may have helped.
