Apply EA.
Preferably for undersubscribed major.
Strong LOR.
Strong stats/profile are a given.

Worked for my kid.

Pretty much the same for mine.
3.9/4.6 1560 12APs

Got good merit offers from CWRU and Rochester

OP. Yes DC likes Rochester too. Will RD.
Were your DC's merit offers both full scholarship?

Pretty close, one was 45ish and the other a bit more. She was also NSMF which might have added a bit.

Thanks, that's great.

How important is the test score as a factor?

No idea to be honest.

Engineering but not CS.

If your kid is chasing merit, and liked CWRU and Rochester, what other schools appealed?
Anonymous
Make sure your kid has some ECs and that they have leadership roles as well. My DC will be a freshman next year and got over 40 k in merit. Went to Admitted Students Day in Feb after a snowstorm and still knew it was the place they wanted to go.

Lehigh

Our kid got 45 or 48K/year. Engineering/CS. Didn’t visit. Also received a lot of merit from Lehigh. Ended up at UVA.

If your profile is such that you are likely to get a T20 admit, you are showered with merit.

They tend to give out some merit to almost all - it is not really merit, almost like Macy/JC Penny style discounting for non-international students.

DC got $48k per year for 4 years. But also got merit from a T20 private and one admit to HYPSM.

Looks like this is the case.

Not sure about Rochester, it’s the most important factor for case merit.

My high stats kid was sent a merit package but was not admitted (true story). They wanted him to show interest with weekly waitlist check-ins. Hard pass.

Pitt. Loved it. Offered 20K in merit. 4.93W, 4.0 UW, 1560, NMSF
(attending Pitt)

Also just FYI, CWRU with merit is still likely to be significantly more expensive than state flagship with no merit.

Pls explain this. Did they get a pre-read for something? How did you get a merit offer but not admission?

No. Applied EA and was deferred and then waitlisted on RD. Little/no demonstrated interest. After waitlist came a merit package and then complicated instructions to stay on the waitlist that weekly check-ins and maybe more essays (can't remember). I assume they were using the WL process to gauge demonstrated interest and increase yield.
