Trigger from the GF post

My child’s allergies are our problem. He is now a teen and his skin/allergies are now worse. We have visited countless allergists to figure out what is causing his skin to flare. We, too, have tried wheat and gluten free diets.

I would never burden or blame others for my child’s food allergies. Nut allergies are fairly common and anything served at a school is nut free these days. That is why homemade food is highly frowned upon or not served to kids at school.

I do think it is a shitty thing to do to confirm a nut allergy and then use a nut ingredient.

I have a friend whose son has a severe nut allergy, like life threatening. They carry an emergency kit at all times. The family is very nice and they are always happy to be invited. The kid often is hungry because he can’t eat food being served.

WTF on the kid being hungry because he can’t eat what is served. What the h doesn’t the family bring some food for him???????

I don't want to minimize what you experienced but on a side note. Where do peanuts fall on the tree nut allergy scale? It has always confused me because peanuts are not tree nuts but we often think of them as in the same family.

FF to the party, she says oops you said ds is allergic to tree nuts..? I made the cookies with almond flour. Don’t ask to accommodate allergies unless you actually intend to. She could have killed my dc but instead of freaking out I just nervously laughed. People don’t talk about how stressful feeding a dc with allergies is because you really can’t trust anyone.

Def not cool BUT it is your responsibility to provide safe food for your kid. I have a friend that always brought angel food cake (one serving) so the kid could have a piece of cake (that’s how sensitive he is) at birthday parties so he wouldn’t feel left out. Total def but super necessary in these cases

OP maybe your kid wasn’t the only kid with a dietary requirement and the hostess missed one.

They’re not a tree nut, not even a nut technically. My tree nut allergic kid can have peanuts.

Why don't you talk about your kid's allergies? Why wouldn't you have confirmed beforehand that the cookies were safe? I would assume homemade food likely isn't ever allergy-free if you have a severe allergy to anything. People don't clean their kitchens like commercial-grade ones. I agree that she shouldn't have asked about your kid's allergies and then gone on to use a product he was allergic to but...she did alert you beforehand?

Sounds like the mom forgot. For those of us who don't have kids with allergies, it's not common to be thinking about it all the time, especially if you're busy hosting a party. If I made homemade cookies for my kid's birthday I would tell everyone that while I didn't use any tree nuts in them, and while everything I used when making the cookies was clean, we do eat PB in our house and I can't guarantee that there are no traces of nuts anywhere in my kitchen.

What school system around here is nut-free? Fairfax County is not.
