Hilarious. They got everything they asked for in their first contract, with the exception of 1% of the salary increase. You’re a clown

This came at a price. There are currently hundreds of school-based instructional positions being cut to balance the budget. Destaff letters are still being sent out. Not sure I would call this a win.

+1. I'm being destaffed. Even though I'm arguably a better teacher than others in my dept (based on test scores and student opinions), I'm getting cut because I have only 9 years in the county vs over 15 for the other teachers. They care about seniority rather than effectiveness. Unions are selfish entities that haven't been relevant since the 1950s.

This is the first time unions have been allowed to negotiate. Before you just belonged to an association.

Based on student opinions? I wouldn’t put much stock in that.

That’s FCPS destaffing policy that has been in place a long time before this CBA.

It sounds more like they did a poor job of negotiating - should have realized that your raise would come at the expense of something, teachers. In this case, it's class size. Is it worth it?

How timely. I was just discussing this with 2 moms who are teachers at a kids birthday party this weekend. They both seemed pissed.

Forgive my ignorance, is this the same as being laid off?

Asking because I keep hearing about a severe shortage?

A Union officer wearing a union T shirt stood up at a meeting last year and spoke publicly about supporting the comprehensive boundary review. It turned me off of their union completely, which is unfortunate because I generally support unions.

Their member teachers don’t want to be moved, but here she was arguing for the boundary review. It was a real unforced error.

You might consider getting in on the rise of homeschooling. Great teachers can be hired by co-ops or a business providing supplemental classes after school. You can even start your own thing (rent a classroom in a church basement or rec center, or outfit a space in your home.) Once word of mouth spreads you will be booked solid.

Make your own hours and calendar, and no admin/school board twisting your arm to use curriculum/methods that are inferior.

Best wishes.

Destaffed teachers are usually placed at another school.

The union did a really bad job at negotiating. It’s shocking how bad they were. They sold out their teachers for pay raises for non members.

+1. Class sizes are going to be huge next year. FCPS also quietly destaffed over a dozen positions at alternative learning centers.

Larger class size, in-school support positions being cut, extra duty assignments during the day. This is not a win. This is completely bogus. The so-called "union" got played.

Cuts that have been made at the school level are really painful. Luckily the cuts at central office are minimal.

Placed at another school in another position or teaching assignment. There’s no mother option this late in the year but to take these unwanted assignment or resign from the district. Horrible to be making these types of cuts at this point in the year.
