NYC is a city where many, many languages are regularly spoken and it's considered normal. I heard and indeed, spoke myself, foreign languages within earshot of NYPD. I was not questioned or detained.

I don't want to call you a complete idiot for believing a woman was arrested for speaking Spanish at Times Square. Nor would I suggest that people share their impressions of your reasoning ability or general worldliness. But I would suggest that you spend some time in a major city.

If you mean that OP fell for an internet hoax, just say so. But the story is that a tourist was rapidly detained by the police such that she was separated from her child, and the police at first would not listen to her pleas about the child being left behind.

Maybe this story is true, maybe it's not, but I HAVE lived and spent time in multiple capital cities of this world, and I can well believe that a stressed out police force would not listen to a detainee.

I believe that the cops didnt realize that there was a child involved. That makes sense and I'm sure thats a regular occurrence. But to believe that someone was arrested *for speaking Spanish,* you have to be a Grade A, prime cut, well marbled moron.

At this point, I would believe it. The ICE/Jan Sixers have quotas to fill, and they will arrest anyone they can to fill their quota.

Then a legitimate liberal news source will pick it up eventually and report it with outrage. Until then, I’ll wait.

That’s not gonna get clicks like Biden, Biden, Biden. I think abandoning mainstream news rn is smart. You do know that the admin is leaking mostly to independent journalists rn. Do you see any of these papers writing about the urgency we’re faced with now? I don’t.

Yes. I figure Stephen Miller leaked that Elon carries a box of pills around...

Grab people and ask questions later. They detained a federal marshal in a Tucson courthouse, oops.

"At least one account describes her as a legal resident, so who knows if she lives in the U.S. or is a tourist."

Did you watch the video? It’s horrifying. NYPD clearly swept her up arbitrarily- and the suggestion that it is because she spoke spanish and appeared Latino makes a lot of sense.

- DHS officers failed to enroll over 233,000 migrant children who crossed the border since January 2021 in immigration proceedings, increasing their risk of trafficking and exploitation.

- Of those enrolled, more than 43,000 children failed to appear.

Would you like to start a DCUM thread for each of them?

There’s a video of a black man telling the cops that the girl standing next to him is her daughter. They all heard it. The mom looks at her, and hesitates getting in the car like it may change something. But, it does not.

That dude was a hero. So calm and doing the right thing for a person in trouble on the street. true New Yorker behavior at its best.

You're crossing the dreams. This is ACAB, not immigration.

One of the links posted is Univision which is an actual source, unless you don’t believe any Spanish language media.

anyway here is an interview with the woman, Javiera Montana, with Chilean television:

This is why my childhood friend and her family are not visiting the US this year. They now live in Brazil and are too afraid of something like this happening to them while visiting. She and her family have visited my family in the US each summer for 12 years since she and her family moved back to Brazil.

I don't follow FIFA, but does the organization really believe something like this won't happen to the athletes?
