I was a Chevy Chase version of this. It was a miserable experience. I went back to work when my youngest entered kindergarten. While my DH makes plenty of money, I like contributing and see it as a back up plan in case something happens. Now that my kids are in college, we pay their tuition from my paycheck. I don’t think men should be on the hook to be the sole provider of whatever the desirable lifestyle trend is; it’s too much pressure.

If the women just become capitalist predators like the worst men of history then we have not progressed as a society. Moving people who were previously not active in the capitalist system into roles where they become hardcore capitalists just increase the total number of predatory capitalists in our society. Who cares what gender they happen to be?

Because women can’t claim innocence or lack of agency anymore once they make the choice to act in concert with the forces that have created such wealth inequality. With great power comes great responsibility. Equality means that women get to share the blame for this economic mess just as much as men.

No, we do not need a “softer” society. That is exactly what we have now and it’s a disaster on many levels

So what are you suggesting? That we go back to the 50s when men were men and women were relegated to just being wives and mothers?

I know too many women of that generation who got married and had kids because that's what was expected of them, including my mother and my friend's mother, and they had no choice. They were miserable.

I'm very glad that I (gen xer) and my DD Gen Z have choices.

I’m also glad we have choices. Only problem I see is that many women don’t respect those who made a different choice than their own.
