MCPS family considering DCPS

I believe it's change of school assignment, but I'm not positive that's what it stands for. Basically, a petition into another school in the system

I would guess most folks in this thread are MCPSers offended by the question. I actually think quite a few DCPS ESes are better than MCPS. Yes, no question, MCPS HSes are better by a ton… but that’s not the question here.

At that rate, no public will satisfy you and you're better off trying to get your kids into one of the top private schools.

I live in an expensive neighborhood near downtown Bethesda, where half of the families send their kids to privates, and I know what I'm getting by sticking to MCPS: I get full services for one of my kids who has special needs; I keep my kids grounded in the real world, despite their socio-economic bubble; my kids are in all advanced classes, and one of them is 3 levels ahead in math, which is only possible in MCPS, compared to surrounding school systems; and since these are large publics, they have a better shot at selective colleges than in small privates where half the kids are alumni of said colleges, and therefore have a hook my kids don't have.

Just a note- kids can accelerate three levels in DCPS math as well.

Yes, that is what it stands for and they are rarely granted.

Can you give more specifics why you think DCPS high schools are garbage? DCPS has at least 3-4 strong high schools. I’ve had two kids graduate from Jackson-Reed. Both went on to Yale and are doing very well there. They were well prepared by their HS. That being said, I wouldn’t move if I was OP. Public schools in general these days have a lot of issues. MCPS has unfortunately declined in quality and the gap between MCPS and upper NW schools has closed considerably

There are always kids who will do well and go to Yale and Harvard or whatever. We had six months of DCPS (PK3) and it was fine. We moved to Silver Spring during Covid and are happy here in MCPS. We wouldn’t move back to the city just for schools.

This is just a variant on the common question “should I buy in Lafayette or Hearst?” The answer, as always, is buy the house you like. In upper northwest and the nearby parts of MoCo, all of the elementary schools are pretty good and none is perfect.

I agree don’t move…it would be strange, but you can always pay to attend DCPS if you live in MD.

Not sure if it’s easy to just pick whichever school you want…but I think it’s $15k?

More expensive than say Blessed Sacrament but cheaper than independents.

This family sounds in bounds for BCC which is pretty darn similar to JR on many levels.

This is so stupid. Go to blessed sacrament.

+1. These folks are going to move across the line for ES then move back for MS & HS? Makes no sense.

Anonymous wrote:DCPS admin and priorities are a joke compared to MCPS. It’s a huge urban school system concerned with getting kids who are lost to show up, not concerned with giving anyone an education that can think beyond even that. If you don’t want the split and can move go to Somerset or Westmoreland Hills or Whitman zone.

DCUM ignorance personified. Ummm, MCPS is 50% larger than DCPS+Charters and 150% bigger than DCPS.

Fairly happy DCPS parent here, but I would not move "for the schools" if I was in-bound for BCC. If you like the house or the neighborhood better, great. It takes more planning and work and some luck to find a good pathway in DC though it's absolutely possible.

But what you have in MoCo is at least as good as what you'll get in upper NW, and arguably a lot better for middle and high.

BCC is not that much better than JR.
