What was score trend last year? Any one test can higher or lower than the trend due to luck in question selection, or good or bad day. Especially if the fall score score was a big jump over last spring, it's OK to plateau and maintain the overall average trend.

DC had 262 in Spring '24, same 262 in Fall, 264 in Winter and a year later 261 Spring '25.

No growth for a whole year.

AIM / AMP7 student. It's also good score for a 7-9 th grader doing very well in Algebra, not very high for hyper acceleration to algebra at a young age, where you need to have runway for many years or higher leve math ahead.

It's hard to say whether they are at a (temporary) plateau (which is fine!) or hungry for more exposure to next level concepts.

What does your kid think about class. Too easy? Just right? Successful but stressful?

Have you done any outside exposure, like working ahead in IXL / Khan / Alcumus / AoPS? I have free lessons, videos, and practice problems. That's the obvious thing to try.

Some kids are very good at learning in class but unmotivated or unaware to look beyond things outside of class. Try some more exposure and see if kid is interested and able. I kid at that score level should be able to grasp at least some of next level algebra and geometry with independent learning.

My kid has become very distracted. DC used to do Khan Academy in the beginning of the year and then just stopped. 264 was in Winter and now it's gone down which was why I got concerned. It just seems like DC didn't learn anything new. DC found the class too easy and got bored.

After the lower score, I told DC that they have to 30 Math every day in the summer when we are home. DC is putting up a stink for that. I guess unless DC supplements outside, nothing is going to help improve the scores.

Why on earth would you force a kid who's already ahead of their classmates to do math over the summer if they're not the kind of kid who likes to do math for fun? They will just be even more bored and ahead next year plus feel resentful about the extra math work.

I meant what was the score the year before

Khan is boring. If the kid doesn't want to do Alcumus or math at home, then the kid will be terrible in high school if you push to accelerate further. A lot of kids get ahead in early elementary but aren't interested in rapid progress forever. There's a lot more to the world, even for smart people, than math.

My kid goes up and down from test to test but the overall trajectory is up. I think the nature is that sometimes they get lucky on the hard questions and something they can puzzle out on their own. Then the next test the hard questions are something they have no context for.

Reading was similar. Plateau then a jump, but overall trend was up.

+1 don't punish your kid for the limitations of the test. Also +1 to chill.

You should not assume that your child did not learn anything this year because of one test.

Because that's what tiger moms do!

(Not OP.) I aspire to be an ocelot mom. My kid does Khan Academy only because he claims math class is too easy for him at school. I want to teach him persistence and tolerance for frustration, so I ask him to do a bit of math every day, not for a specific amount of time, but to just get through a lesson. After that, his time is own to play Minecraft or whatever. He's gotten 2 years ahead of his current grade already, and had decided to study middle school physics instead of moving onto the next year of math, with our full support. What I ultimately want to foster is a love for learning, not a test score generator.

It’s typical for kids to stay steady or even drop in MAP btw spring and fall (look at the avg growth trend chart), as they aren’t learning any math over summer and likely forgetting much of what they learned in the spring. Unless you supplement over summer of course. The spring ‘25 score seems like the anomaly. Is it possible DC was tired, not feeling well?

Or it could normal variance based on getting one or two questions wrong earlier or later. You parents need to stop helicoptering and Tiger moming so much. It’s ridiculous. You’re nitpicking a score that is at the 99% percentile for grade level and fretting over it. News flash. Unless you’re doing home enrichment, this is perfectly normal. You want to raise an independent, hardworking child? You’re not going to be there when they start college or their first job. Stop looking over their shoulder every step of the way and maybe make sure they’re a more well rounded individual with pursuits and actual passions outside of math.
