when will the new high school programs start?

what would it mean to turn the consortia program into regions? Does that mean that all of MCPS could apply for those programs or parts of the county could apply for them but a broader region than the current consortium?

They haven't finalized anything yet, but they were talking about creating six regions across the county, each region with 4-5 high schools, and then having magnet or career programs that would be generally replicated in each region. Students from a region's schools could apply to any school in that region. There should be more details presented to the board at the end of June.

thanks that's very helpful

Does that mean that all schools would be in a consortium, with bussing provided, and that each region would operate as the DCC/NEC operate now? I know they haven't decided anything, but just curious if it's basically saying they should create more consortia.

They seem to be avoiding the word consortium and using region instead, and I can't really tell why or what the difference is.

That's the direction MCPS seems to be headed in, yes.

It’s not about just ranking your HS choice, it about the programs which currently have regions.

The program analysis is supposed to address the future of the consortia programs, whether they turn them each into regions, or whatever else they're planning.

Here is my prediction: the Blair magnet will move to Woodward, because the convenience survey for the secondary program analysis focused heavily on the inequity of longer bus rides for students. No one in their right minds would simply close a nationally renowned academic program under the guise of having only local programs.

Why can’t Blair and Woodward have the magnet program?

My guess is it will stay at Blair to cover the DCC region or whatever the new version of that region is, the Poolesville one will stay at Poolesville, and they'll add 3-4 more elsewhere in the county to cover other regions. I doubt they will close it.

It's because the consortia choice is actually school choice and they are moving to a program-based choice.

In the DCC, I can apply to a school because I prefer it to another, and my child doesn't have to be admitted to a program to have a chance of getting into that school (though it's harder to do that for Blair and Wheaton because they're overcrowded and have magnets that take up slots). What they are moving to is that you only can change schools from your home school if your child is admitted to a program.

They have not said that. You are speaking very confidently without justification. I am not saying it won’t happen, but it’s good to separate what we know from guesswork.

Whether they will have real data supporting this and actually be completed before is a different question all together because I haven’t been impressed with what they presented thus far.

The whole program analysis is political, and I can't readily identify rigor associated with the so-called analysis. MCPS posts a convenience survey with a particular focus on travel times so they, of course, will get the answer they were hoping for - parents don't want a long drive to school. That will provide MCPS with carte blanche to do whatever they have in mind, but have yet to reveal to the community.

Likely would be the IB program for its region, is my guess.
