Would recommend getting an internet offer first so you know what you are looking at.
When we bought our Forrester years ago, they really didn't have much promotions going on only like $1,500 off MSRP, so we opted to buy used one w/ like 5K miles. Much more wiggle room since they have a higher profit margin. Also 2nd USAA! |
OP here - thanks. I knew about the credit union and costco buying services, and have access to both, but didn't even think of our AAA membership! |
OP here. this was the general impression i got, based simply on the fact that when we visited a dealer and test drove a forester and outback, the salesman didn't even bother to get our phone number or try to sell us on it. maybe he doesn't need to... but there certainly wasn't the initiative or pressure that we saw at dealers for other cars. which made me wonder... do they even need to provide incentives?? |
I second this. Although what we did, was take the best price the USAA car buying service gave us and take it to other dealers to match (some of the USAA dealers were far away). A local dealer matched it and we bought it without haggling over the internet. We never set foot in the dealership until I went in to buy the car. |

OP,
I'm the one who found the Outback folks pretty laid back for car sales folk when I was looking last summer. I didn't pursue it, I ended up with a Honda Civic. So not sure where things are now. |
Thanks for the suggestion - great idea! |
This is where we bought ours and I was very pleased with the service. We hate negotiating so we got internet quotes from all the local dealerships and then played them off each other a bit via email. Perhaps you should try that and try the Costco or AAA route and compare. |

If you don't mind driving and you would need to research any tax implications, I noticed that cars are cheaper at dealerships in PA or WV.
