Pittsburgh, Philly or Richmond are all great suggestions. There are quaint shopping districts in all three cities, great food, museums, and are all a relatively short drive. I think there are a lot of opportunities to do nature-y things in all three cities as well.

Yes, we went recently for a college tour and were pleasantly surprised. Great baseball stadium too if they are into that.
