There’s a lot of girls who start volleyball at 12 years old. I’d put her in rec league and see how she likes it. Are you in Maryland or VA?

NP and to add to this, there is a lot between rec and highly competitive club teams that are expensive and travel all over. We can give you options if we know your location. There are definitely places she can play for fun and even at a decent level of competition that isn’t too competitive or crazy at the older ages.

Not PP. any of these in the Falls Church area?

Hi! We are in VA and I’m the poster that said there were options between rec and advanced club. I’m not trying to be condescending and just another parent, like all of you. My daughter started out with Galaxy League at NVVA and it was a really good in between option for her for two years before we were ready to make the club commitment. We know a lot of girls in different clubs who did the same.

Some clubs have lower level options without travel, which is what I believe the OP was asking about. It’s all too costly in VA, we can agree on that, but some teams are about half of the traveling team costs.

Vienna Elite had high school aged teams this year that did not travel. I believe the OP asked for options that’s didn’t involve travel to get your butt kicked elsewhere. These might not be any higher level than Galaxy league but it’s a non traveling club team.

I don’t have knowledge of MD since we live in VA.

I just double checked since it’s been a few years and Galaxy is currently going for grades 3-12 at NVVA. My daughter did it 3 years ago and it was good then.

We live in MD and I am not aware of anything equivalent to Galaxy. The Vienna Elite option with no travel is a joke. Don't they charge ~2500 for a no-travel option with one practice per week? This is close to the price for travel clubs in MD (where you get two practices per week and 1-2 tournaments per month).

Yes, but remember, it’s much more expensive in VA. It’s common for club teams to pay 5-6k. If parents live in VA, some are paying that for low level club teams and traveling to lose everything. Our options are pay the high fees, drive to MD, don’t play club, or hope your kid makes Volleyball Viet or DYS (the two cheaper club teams in VA).

NVVA also has the similar option of non travel club teams for less money then their travel club teams. I don’t know how they are different than their Galaxy teams since we don’t have experience with them and don’t know anyone who’s ever joined those.

I would be furious if I lived in Virginia and had to pay those club fees, when the cost is almost half in MD. It's the same metropolitan area and I feel like parents are being ripped off in Virginia. DMV is an arm of Vienna Elite, which tries to import to MD the high prices of club volleyball in Virginia. If the prices were regulated by the club costs, DMV should have charged prices similar to other clubs in MD. It is the will of the clubs to charge more in Virginia than in Maryland, not the real costs to operate the clubs.

Any suggestions for Bethesda/Chevy Chase area for a 10 year old girl?

I heard that MVSA still has a few spots for their fall league in the lower age group. We loved that program and aging out of it is a bummer:

MVSA and MOCO run the best fall programs in that area. We've done both and they are both great. Getting into either one would be a great place to start. They are a bit different in approach though. On both you are assigned to a team and have a practice with that team once a week with a consistent coach throughout the fall. MVSA tends to do straight competition between teams on their competition day. MOCO tends to do a combined skills/competition day on their competition day.

Both are hard to get into and sell out quickly, but neither has started yet and sometimes players drop out once they get teams formed. Register for the waitlist at both and send them an email letting them know you are really interested and you may get lucky.
