How do you avoid the ugly sandal noise?

Yep - same here! I returned a pair of sandals I really liked because of a suction noise whenever I walked.

I agree with you here. If the strap is higher up on the arch its less likely to make that sound and to hold tighter to your foot, but closer to your toes is more likely for the shoe to flap and make that noise.
