Hmm. I don't think the Broadway performers are rich people.

Kennedy Center is not Broadway and the audience is mostly rich people.

Agreed. You could raze the building tomorrow and it would never affect 99% of DC area residents.

They don't care about DC area residents. It will affect the Center's national prestige and they do care about that.

I know plenty of people who are not local but within a 4-hour drive who would come a couple times a year for certain shows. They will not be doing that now. DH and I used to save up to an attend one opera a year. 100% not doing that now. I won't darken the door of that institution until Trump and his fascist ilk are long gone, and I am hardly alone. It will be either largely empty or largely MAGA, and while the latter may make money, it doesn't confer prestige. And although the administration will claim everyone is coming to enjoy "Trump our Lord the Musical" or whatever, most people know propaganda when they hear it.

Why do people make up statistics to support their opinions? Do they think it somehow legitimizes their thoughts? Do they not realize that educated people who actually care about facts will notice that the sources for these made-up stats are missing? Or that we will often look to learn what the actual statistics might be?

Oh, and this 99% is very off. Some people — usually those who haven’t actually been to the Kennedy Center themselves — mistakenly seem to believe that the Kennedy Center is only the Opera House. The Center has multiple performance spaces of different sizes, and an extremely wide selection of performances — or at least it did before the current administrative changes.

Same. I have some more discretionary income and time now due to life changes and had been thinking about going to the Kennedy Center. Nope, I will save those dollars for other venues in DC or trips out of DC.

Looks like the Millennium Stage performances have been cut back. The Kennedy Center used to have them almost every day — except for a major holiday or two. Now they’re listed as Wednesdays through Saturdays.

"Any performer who isn't professional enough to perform for patrons of all backgrounds, regardless of political affiliation, won't be welcomed," Grenell added. "In fact, we think it would be important to out those vapid and intolerant artists to ensure producers know who they shouldn't hire - and that the public knows which shows have political litmus tests to sit in the audience."

He continued, "The Kennedy Center wants to be a place where people of all political stripes sit next to each other and never ask who someone voted for but instead enjoy a performance together."

I've been going to The Kennedy Center for years and have seen a few dozen shows there. Never once have I had anyone approach me with political conversation or have I approached other patrons with such dialogue. I've never given any thought to what the performer's political views are. I'm pretty sure 99% of patrons and performers feel the same as I do.

What is this Grenell idiot talking about?

He is a MAGA fool and, like Old Faithful, blows off MAGA diatribe every hour.

This is absolutely not true. They used to do a great job of providing free and cheap programming. I've been to shows for $10.

Sounds like attendance is down.

They also have an amazing partnership with DCPS schools. As a teacher I have been able to take classes for decades to see performances. Its part of a growing up in DC

Me too! My spouse and I sat front row center when seeing Hamilton through some voucher lottery program. $10 seats! It was quite a privilege for us not so privileged folks.

Yes! And, like many former DCPS students, we continue to go to performances and other programs at the Kennedy Center as adults. The Millennium Stage performances alone are a wonderful way to introduce the breadth of Kennedy Center programs to locals —and beyond. The Kennedy Center has truly been a treasure!

I’m pausing here in gratitude to the Kennedy Center shuttle buses that help to make it work for the non-drivers among us.

I’ve lived here my entire life and have never been to the Kennedy Center, nor do I know anyone or work with anyone who’s been, either.

That isn’t believable.

That’s unfortunate.
I’m curious though, are you absolutely positively sure that you know the details re: the pastimes of your acquaintances and coworkers well enough to make assertions like that about how they might spend their time when they’re not with you?
