best shoes for loooong walks

I walk a lot and use NB 1080s. They’re running shoes. No problems for me.

Have you tried moleskin? Apply it ahead of time to spots you think you might get a blister or hot spot (like heel). That works for me when hiking.

I wear running shoes and add a firm insole. Brooks Ghost is too mushy for long walks. Added Superfeet and they’re perfect for me.

Good socks and moleskin make all the difference.

I’ve looked at this walk before and had planned to sign up this past year. But it really did fill up so quickly! I hope it was an overall great experience, save the blisters.

I think it depends on your particular feet. I have narrow heels, but wide –ish toes and I wear altras for long walks. They have a wide toe box but also don’t rub my heel, where I tend to get blisters.

To PP who mentioned the One Day Hike in DC -- thank you! I hadn't heard of it, but I will check it out.

If anyone is interested in the Great Saunter, here's the link: https://shorewalkers.org/great-saunter/

Entry is in February and this year it filled up in 3 days, so sign up early if you want to do it!

Running shoes are designed for running. Walking shoes are designed for walking and specifically not for running. Your foot movement is a little different when walking v. running - it's actually not just a marketing gimmick.

My son is in ROTC and kept getting blisters on his early Army ruck outings. Along with proper walking shoes (which the Army does not use), socks and just getting used to it help.

Anytime I am going to put on over 10 miles, I tape up my big and little toes no matter what shoes I have on.

Is there one happening for 2025? That link focused on 2024.

My best walking shoes are my Skechers memory foam. Although I don’t think I e done more than 12 kn a day, they are great and my feet feel the same at the end of the day

May I recommend my waterproof Solomon brand trail shoes? Purchased at Sierra two years ago. Daily hiker/fitness walker.

I have walked several marathons and my go-to is the Hoka Bondi.

Every two years. Check back next February

Registration for the 2024 Hike Across Maryland (HAM) is now open to registration by anyone (until now, there has been a time in which only MCM members could sign up). The HAM, which is conducted every two years, is a 41-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail across the entire state of Maryland in a single day. This year the HAM will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024. If you know anyone who is interested in undertaking this grueling challenge, let them know that they can sign up, or learn more about the HAM, by going to this link: 2024 Hike Across MD.

Someone posted recently about On Clouds being really good for walking.

I did the breast cancer 3 day awhile ago like the pp and wore Brooks without issues. But i had them fitted at a running store and got a larger size and width than I'd typically buy. I also swore by wrightsocks and changed them every 10 miles or so. I also used a blister powder inside the socks. It really helped, but I can't remember what it was called unfortunately. (Maybe Blistershield?)

Anonymous wrote:I did the Great Saunter this weekend in New York. It's 32-mile walk around the perimeter of Manhattan. I trained for it, but I still wound up with some crazy blisters once the miles hit 20+. If I do this again next year, are there better shoes to wear (I was wearing Brooks running shoes), or is a 32-mile walk inevitably going to result in blistered feet? If you have found magic shoes, please share!

I have done track and distance running since a kid. The only thing I ever found was just to replace shoes often.

Depending on how much you go at it, even every month. So don't overspend on gimmicks, just replace them often.

Your Brooks running shoes sound good but your socks could probably use an upgrade. When I walk or run more than 10 miles I wear Wright Anti Blister socks and put KT tape on my bunion and other spots that are vulnerable to blisters. When I joined a 25 mile walk I passed out a lot of the KT tape after mile 18.
