Will tariffs cause food shortages?

Seriously. I stocked up at the beginning of Covid and it turns out it wasn't really necessary.

On fresh fruits and vegetables? I bought a lot of canned goods when it became clear that Trump’s tariff threats were becoming reality but it’s hard to store things like avocados and fresh seafood (95 percent of which are imported.). We’ve been having avocados and shrimp a lot more than we normally do in preparation for the time of when they become unaffordable

I am really nervous about this. I feel like the tariffs are going to have all sorts of repercussions considering how intertwined our supply chain is. I keep a good pantry since Covid and I’ve purchased a few electronics I was thinking of, as well as a countertop mill and wheat berries (they last forever!), and a pasta machine. I’ve also stocked up on personal care products, pantry staples, kids clothes for the fall and kids shoes in the next size up. Plus over the counter meds and cleaning supplies.

Since Covid I try not to run out of things and always keep a backstock. It was very handy this winter when it snowed for a few days and I didn’t need to run out for toilet paper or food.

Not everyone has enough room to stockpile supplies. Especially freezer space. My freezer is completely full. Normally, I keep it about half-full, but I bought seafood and a lot of other items that are imported just in case prices skyrocket. This is crazy. Just crazy. And for no reason whatsoever. The economy was doing just fine under Biden, and it would have continued doing well under Harris.

I guess owning the libs means sticking a needle in your eye, eh Magas? Does that feel good?

The signs say something like Wegmans is committed to keeping prices low for their customers, but due to tariffs and the inability to source this item from inside the US, the price will unfortunately have to increase soon and/or there may be temporary shortages or empty shelves. I didn't take a photo of the sign so I don't know the exact wording. Similar signs were also on the coffee aisle, international foods section (Asian foods), and I saw the same yellow cards in the wine/beer section as I walked by, but didn't note which products they were for.

I mainly shop at Wegmans, Trader Joe's, and Harris Teeter. Wegmans was the first store I've seen notices at so far.

It’s hard for me to get past “Wegmans is committed to keeping prices low for customers.” Since when? And I like Wegmans (their chocolate chip cookies are to die for) but it’s never been low priced anything there.

I was at the Caps game last night and oddly many of the food vendors were out of stuff (either by the first break or from the start): such as yellow mustard, chicken patties and donuts (I never knew there was a chicken sandwich on a donut stand in there). The food situation was off. The workers were telling people they didn’t get their shipments in.

The really weird thing was the mustard. No yellow mustard.

Interesting... The USA primarily imports mustard seed from Canada.

We're screwed.

Why stockpile cash? That makes no sense to me unless they are expecting bank runs and banks to fail. Anyone know?

Think about the average IQ of someone who works for Donald Trump.

Stockpiling toilet paper seems stupid. Most of it is made in the US (though probably at least partly from imported Canadian wood pulp).

I'm stockpiling imported olive oil, pasta, rice, certain spices I use regularly, some canned goods that come from other countries, a few other staples that are imported. I always keep at least six months worth of toilet paper in my attic, and I've added a bit to my stores, but not that much. I don't think TP will go up much, but imported pasta and other bottled goods I like to buy regularly will. And avocados and bananas, but I can't stockpile those, so I'll just eat fewer of them. I noticed avocados were $6.99 for four of them at Wegman's today. Seems higher than normal.

You are a TP hoarder even when there is no supply chain issue, who thinks stockpiling TP is stupid, but you’re also increasing your own stockpile? Pick a lane.

+1 They have insider information, but they’re also completely unqualified for the jobs they hold and they have bad judgment, so who knows?

??? We were told clearly to not panic buy as the supply chain would not be overly affected by COVID.

Anytime there was a shortage in the store it was due to panic buying. And there was no shortage on produce.

I saw an interview with the Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, and he said we're a few weeks out from empty shelves. The last full ships from China are arriving. Sounded like more ships were not coming...?

Really? Where does the paper come from? Where does the plastic wrap come from? Hint: Other countries.

I'm concerned about power interruptions, too. A crazy man in charge could easily threaten us with power shortages. He'd love to have us have no heat, no AC, etc. Stephen Miller would certainly love to cause that type of suffering.
