Ending Energy Star

I just might take Canada’s offer to fast track doctors into their society.

I think it should be discussd how that program results in the use of undersized compressors in refrigerators and freezers, which run too often and prematurely fail and wind up in dumpsters way too soon.

OMG thank you for raising this. The Energy Star appliance have just gotten more and more “disposable” and short-lived. I have sent several such fridges off to the landfill. It makes me sick to do so, but it’s not practical to repair them when the compressor is shot. I can’t imagine all of the environmental impacts of these ill-conceived regulations which turned us into disposable product culture.

EPA gets its head handed to it again.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a controversial Utah oil railway expansion that was initially denied in 2023 by the District of Columbia's U.S. Court of Appeals.

The decision was a unanimous 8-0, with Justice Neil Gorsuch recusing himself.

In 2021, the federal Surface Transportation Board, a federal agency that regulates rail transportation, approved the northeastern Utah expansion brought by seven Utah counties that would span along the Colorado River to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

Environmentalists argued that the agency had not adequately considered the environmental impact that the 88-mile railway would create, and that it would have broad implications for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews.

The main effect of this is to supercharge oil production in the Unita Basin. Oil from the Basin is high in paraffin content, which means it needs to be transported hot and can't be sent through a pipeline because it freezes at temps below 100 F. There are over 200 trucks per day which transport this stuff to the refineries in SLC; putting in a railroad will allow the oil companies to pump and transport significantly more oil.

The other upshot is that environmental groups can't use the National Environmental Policy Act as an all-purpose trump card to stop development projects on public land. Reading Kavanaugh's opinion makes it sound like the court is tired of their antics on this issue. That could be huge down the road.

Got a link? My stainless counter depth Whirlpool fridge is somehow ten years old. It still looks good and has had no repairs. Ice and water through the door work flawlessly. I have all Energy Star appliances, use LED bulbs, and a high efficiency two zone heat pump. My latest power bill is $138 for a 3200 sq ft home. That’s cheaper than a solar panel payment. During the winter it averaged about $168.

All my old appliance still work. Anything bought in last 5 years last 18 -24 months or seemingly just after warranty ends. My 20 year old appliances are way better.
