Is she or her team affected much by the change in birthday classifications? There may be more teams looking to pick up players than usual. For example, my daughter’s team is splitting because almost half the team is now eligible to stay at 10u and the others move up to 12u. They had an unusual number of late 2014 birthdays and are now looking for more girls to make 2 teams. If that’s not an option, I think it’s fine to switch to rec if it’s a decent program. |
| If it is a pride thing, is there a way you can have an honest conversation with her about it? can you record highs and lows of each practice and game to review - with her input? And then see about signing up for multisession softball with some lessons, batting cages. or offer a trial period before trying out for a different team? |
OP here. I hadn't heard about this, thanks for sharing. She has a Feb birthday so it doesn't affect her directly but I guess it could affect teams in general. Interesting info. |

We have several travel players also playing 18U (which 2011s are for rec) in our program. Some of them are on lower end B level teams and some upper end C level teams. Most are playing because their travel team isn't playing spring and they aren't yet in HS, but some are playing because they want more innings at a prime position and some are playing because they love our league.
We may well be in the same league as 05/02/2025 09:29, or one of the others in the same interleague group. |
It should not affect many 14u teams, OP. Just try out for more teams. Like try to find 10 tryouts, not 2-3. |
I actually think it could affect lots of 14U teams as you have 12U players who might be able to stay down vs all move to 13U in the fall. Ours is in that boat. |
OP here. There are not that many teams within the geographic radius we are willing to drive for practice. |
OP - Please drop me an e-mail at fled.edge1u@icloud.com. I know the 2011 teams well and may be able to help point you in the right direction. |
| I would expect she is playing against a much better level of competition in travelwhich ultimately may be helping her game more than you think. |
Given this OP, how good is your former rec league? Are you still in touch with people there who can give you an idea of the level of play? If there's anything I'm seeing in rec, it's that the level of play is ping ponging wildly depending on coaches and cohorts. A few girls drop out or go travel and boom, play drops drastically. A few girls step up and get interested, coach starts a quality rec+ team, or travel girls add rec and boom, play goes up drastically. |
